My hobby: Model Railroads

For many years, I've been a model maker and train enthusiast. I've built a number of model railways and find the creative challenge of building these little worlds to be quite rewarding.
This is my most recent N Scale model railway, which is loosely based on the English countryside.

Nice layout.

I used to enjoy model railroading, but stopped when my job kept me away from home several days a week. I had to much to do around the house when I was home to spend time doing that. Now that I am retired, I have the time to get back into that hobby, but I no longer have the motivation. At one time I had an HO layout that was about 100 sq ft and had dozens of buildings. I still have a Lionel O27 engine and few cars that date back to about 1950. Most of my HO trains date back to 1975-1995. Unfortunately, the younger generations today do not seem to be interested in trains, either life-size or models.

The Science Museum of Chicago has a 3500 sq ft layout that models scenes from Atlantic Coast to the Pacific coast, the midwest plains and praires and the Rocky Mountains. They can operate 20 trains at one time. If you ever make it to Chicago, be sure to visit.

pretty neat!

one thing my stepdad and I used to do was build model cars, making them as 'realistic' as possible...we'd make spark plug wires, sand down the tires if it was a street/race car with slicks, etc....we also built an entire town to display the cars on...roads, benches, people, bushes, trees, traffic signals, etc., etc...I think it got knocked over in our basement and we never ended up rebuilding it.

50ish years ago in the town where I went from 3rd to 12th grade there was a model railroad club and once a year they would open their building to the folks of the town to oogle. Just fantastic stuff. It was a pretty big building and all of it was a MR layout.

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum is the largest in North America and is just amazing. I usually visit once or twice a year.  Ti22, your display here is wonderful and shows what can be done in small spaces.
