This morning while shaving I heard Brahms' Symphony No. 2 in D, and when the third movement (Allegretto Grazioso) began, it suddenly took me down memory lane to a summer in the late 1960s. I attended Arrowbear Music Camp in the southern California mountains that summer, and at the end of the session I was asked, along with others among the best high school musicians there, to stay for what was called reading camp. It consisted of 2 full days of sight-reading newly published orchestral pieces, performing them for the gathered school music teachers from all over the western U.S., so that they could decide what they might want to order for their schools. What was exciting was having to perform the pieces without ever having seen (and often without even having heard) them, knowing nothing about their tempo, interpretation, etc. Anyway, when the third movement of Brahms' symphony began I was suddenly surprised to be just about the only one playing, on my oboe, and I almost stopped playing before realizing that my solo was how it was supposed to start. Fortunately, I didn't play it too badly.
