Well, it's that time of year again.  You know, the time to create PivotCharts for your spreadsheet shave journal Smile

I have to admit that this past year was an atypical year.  Three and a half months worth of shaves were completed with one setup due to the house remodel.  Over the past 6 weeks, there have been 24 "no shave" days due to a vacation and a surgery.  The overall numbers were skewed due to the 3.5-month setup which included the Rockwell 6S and the Karve Overlander (the Overlander was used slightly more than the 6S during this period), MdC Fougere soap, DS Cosmetics w/ 28mm SynBad knot, and Wholly Kaw Fougere Bouquet and Padre Leon splashes.

The following represents the most used gear excluding the period between late Feb and mid June:

Aftershave Brand:  Chatillon Lux (i truly love the base and the scents...I really wish he would do a seasonal release of any scent just so i don't run out)

Aftershave Scent:  Black Tie Razor Co - Sandalwood (thanks again Dom for a fantastic recreation of AoS Sandalwood!)

Brush:  Wild West Brushworks - 26mm brown synthetic knot (not a big surprise on this one, the knot has become my favorite synthetic knot so this and one other handle with the same knot have been used most often in the past year)

Razor:  Once again, the Rockwell 6S (specifically with plate 4) overwhelmingly was the top spot for 2022.  The Karve Overlander was a new addition to the den this year but it was still used approximately half as much as the 6S.  Overall, 21 different razors were used this year.  A Gillette Speedster came in 3rd with only 8 uses for the year.  The remaining 18 razors that were each used less than 4 times and one of those razors was a pass-around.

Soap Brand:  it's a tie!  Both Saponificio Varesino and Stirling were used 14 times.  Coming in at a close 2nd was Ethos Grooming (13) followed by another tie between Black Tie Razor Co and Eufros (9).  The number of uses/brand really doesn't like much but 48 different brands were used throughout the year

Soap Scent:  Grooming Department Verbrannt with 10 uses.  The higher number of uses on this one was because I committed to finishing the soap prior to our remodel.  The next highest used soap scent goes to Black Tie Razor Co Sandalwood with 9 uses.

Discovery of the Year:  this may make some cringe but I discovered the overall joy/satisfaction of minimalism this year.  Obviously, I still enjoy variety but my recent Den Cleanout has relegated the majority of my soaps/splashes to the basement.  I also want to give an Honorable Mention to Encre Noir.  I've never been into colognes but a post by Bouki on this scent resulted in a purchase.  It turned out to be a purchase that i can't be more happier about...what an amazingly good scent!

Goals for 2023:  I'm going to do my best to keep the majority of the software stowed away this year.  Next year's list should be very easy to compile with only a limited number of gear being used.  The software figures should start to match the number of uses I generally see with the Rockwell 6S.

What was some (or all) of your most used gear for 2021?  Did any gear takeover as a "top spot"?  Any goals other than those participating in the DFR thread?

From my files for 2022:

Razor:  Karve Overlander with 55 uses

Blade:  Personna Platinum Chrome

Soap: Ethos Clean

Brush:  A 4-way tie! Each saw 17 uses: Manchurian badger (Trotter Quasar handle), SOC cherry wood boar, APSCo mixed badger/boar in Trotter Supernova, and another Manchurian badger in Trotter Samish Dusk. This is the first year since 2016 that a SynBad hasn't been #1. A SynBad did have 14 uses, but there were 3 other knots/brushes ahead of it.

I love these type of posts. May I ask, how do you track the shave counts? Thanks!

Hi Ali, and a happy new year to you!

I use this format, from a member here.

I have tweaked it to my preferences and find it to be the best thing for me. I am more than happy to help!

The Overlander easily took the #2 spot in my den!  The combo of mild/smooth/efficient just blew me away.  I'd really like to try the stainless steel version to see if it's much different than the brass

I just use an Excel spreadsheet.  At one point, it was setup to track practically everything regarding the shave but over the past couple of years, i've reduced the things I track down to only a few items.  I also use it to keep track of inventory.  When I started the spreadsheet, i was keeping track of $ spent...not a good idea Rolleyes    Over the past year or two i've been learning about Tables and PivotCharts and there is a very good chance I'll start a new spreadsheet for 2023 that incorporates all those efficiencies.

Pivot Tables useful; remember beta testing Improv

I can't manage tracking my shaving but based on my general awareness I'd say most used:

Razor - Rockwell 6s (plate 3 or 4) - this may change a little this year as I am really enjoying the Aylsworth Drakkant, particularly the OC plate with an Israeli red blade  Happy2

Blade - Feather

Soap - this is a hard one but I think a slight edge would have to go to MacDuff's soap with a close second probably Tallow+Steel  Happy2

Post shave product_ Thayer's Witch Hazel

Splash - Bay Rum! Seriously?  What else  Big Grin

Lather Bowl - Captain's Choice Copper Heavy.

Brush - Tough one because I rotate a lot but it would be a Semogue Boar for sure.

Discovery of the Year - the Aylsworth Drakkant Razor - I'm glad I got in on the pass around because this is a great razor and with the addition of the + and OC plates its pretty much a razor for almost everyone. It is challenging the Rockwell 6s as my daily driver.  Can there be only one??

Thank you to DFS and all of the great members for another great year of shaving and shaving accessories!

Razor Top 5
  1. Stirling ST
  2. Heritage Adjustable Prototype
  3. PAA Copper Ascension
  4. Haircut & Shave Co. Ti1.30
  5. Rex Ambassador

Brushes were used fairly equally over the course of the year.  I tend to just rotate through them.

Soaps.  I spent a large portion of the year going through samples.  About half of my shaves this year were working through them.  I only had a few soaps that weren't samples that I used more than once this year.  Each of these was used 2x
  1. WSP Formula T Mahogany
  2. WSP Formula T Gaelic Tweed
  3. Stirling Intrepid man
  4. PAA Gondolier
  5. Moon Soaps Amaretto
  6. A&E Never Alone
  7. A&E Never Alone 2

I don't bother tracking aftershaves.

Blades weren't even close.  Perma-Sharp Super over everything else.  Used 3x more than the second place finisher.
