Anyone else here live in the country where they have to tackle these things by themselves i.e. No city spraying program? My weapons of choice have evolved over the years and my current battle plan looks like this

Malithion
Black Fog Fogger machine
Cutter yard spray

Repeat once every three weeks.

It's amazIng that after you step off our property they carry you away.... Yet in our yard we are able to enjoy the summer.... Used to be a mosquito was a nuisance. I can remember being covered in bites every summer and having Mom put Benadryl lotion on them.... Now they are a real health risk and that risk only seems to grow.... Anyone else have better means to fight them??

Never heard of them

Actually, Manitoba has a roadside attraction for them. We live with them, but can't stand them. Some summers are better then others, but they still suck....literally.

As for fighting them, we allow fogging in our area and welcome it. Bat houses help or so I understand as they eat thousands of them a night. They released schwacks of dragon flies a few years ago to eat them too.

Bruce my man!!!! Some Summers I swear they look that big!!!! They make some agent orange type stuff for them that I could buy with my farmers chemical permit but, I'd like my kids and dogs not to grow third arms or fifth paws.... The current regiment has proven effective.... Spray or fog at night let sit overnight and roll on.... But I'm here to tell you wet springs here mean get your battle gear on!!!

Oh yes, the joyful sound of the fogging trucks at night. Make sure the dog is inside, grab the kids and close the windows....bye bye mosquitoes, at least for a couple weeks.

For all you guys that think this is a joke, it isn't. They actually fog like this here, it sounds like that and they recommend being in doors when they do. It looks like a scene out of some post apocalyptic zombie movie, but it's life in Mosquito land.

Mosquitoes are the state bird of Michigan! Unfortunately, DEET is the only thing that keeps them away.

To spray them where I live they'd need to call in the Air Force to do it. Square mile after sq' mile of forest makes it impractical. In town there's no need to spray. Just removing any containers of standing water gets rid of the mosquitoes. I love to leave them until I see larvae in them, then I dump them to watch them die.

Yup, DEET works, so does doing what needs to be done outdoors during days of high wind. Bright sun and low humidity seems to help somewhat.

In our typical warm season we have a progression of biting insects. After the spring wet season and the mosquitoes, we get the black flies. Mosquitoes suck, but the BFs slash and lick. They hurt and the wounds don't like to heal easily. Black flies like the sun, so moving to a dark area (not shade) helps. Stay indoors. It's easy to inhale a black fly and that's always good for coughing, choking and puking. Breathe through the nose.

After the black flies the heat and dryness of July brings out the Deer Flies. They're a small version of a horse fly. They can be felt as the drill for blood and they aren't terribly fast. If one is tolerant one can wait until they have almost struck blood, then swap them. Or they can be caught in the air as they fly. Sometime around August they have all been spent and we have a few months of no biting insects. There can be a minor 2nd season of black flies in September, but it's no big deal. DEET works on all of them.

We have a 100% DEET product available locally that works great. Vietnam Jungle Juice was DEET. Yup, works great. Some of the new herbal repellents work, but they really stink.

I am going to have to try your system. They spray by me but I am in the middle of the woods in a swampy area so they only spray the very edge of my front yard. When we first moved in one of our dogs (female boxer) got so bit up you could see 20 some large bites on her. I have an 8 month old son who I would like to have outside but won't let him out there until I take care of the mosquito problem.

The last few years our biggest problem has been with ticks. But that's only because we've grown accustomed to the other biting insects. To combat the ticks we have guinea fowl. The dogs still get ticks, but they go into the woods exploring and the GF don't go there. We rarely get ticks, but that's because we mostly stay in the cleared areas where the GF do patrol and eat the ticks. This year we also have 6 more hens (chicken) and we can't keep them in the pen since they fly too good. So it will be interesting to see if they also help eat the ticks. Can't have enough tick eaters. If the town did spray for mosquitoes I would tell them to shut it off on our road. I don't want my birds poisoned and I certainly don't want to eat eggs with insecticide in them.

When I was a kid in the 60s the city used to fog on hot summer afternoons - all of us neighbourhood kids would run behind the truck in that cool, chemical mist. Its no friggin wonder we're all dying of cancer. What I can't figure out is why no adults at the time thought this might be a bad idea??
