I'm newly retired and been checking out the high end gentleman's shops in my area. Tampa/St Petersburg Florida. Very expensive and not impressed. LM
Many barbers no longer offer shaves. Mine used to do so years ago, but stopped due to the liability insurance costs. Our country has gotten so litigious that if someone got a minor nick, they might file a law suit. In many places, the plaintiff would be awarded significant damages for pain and suffering, even for a minor nick.
Even if my barber still offered shaves, I would not be inclined to get one. When shaving the back of my neck he uses lather produced by a lather machine and uses a disposable razor. Although barbers are allowed to use a shavette, real straight razors are not permitted in many states.
I can get a much better shave at home than I would be able to get in a barber shop. My shaving soaps, brushes, razors, and blades are superior to what the barbershop would offer.

We're climbing out of covid. There are tons of new barber shops opening up for young adults but fewer for older "gentleman." I'm hoping this group will keep classic hot lather shaving alive. The group is for older men and women to share experiences and talk about the new shops in our area. Shaving is what makes this group different.
I still like going to a barber for a shave. Hate brush lather, my hand isn't as steady as it once was, so I don't use a straight.

Most places will no longer (or are not allowed to) use an actual straight razor, which to me has aways been part of the experience. Even in Europe I’ve seen lots of shops that are now using shavettes.

It’s still a bucket list item for me to get an authentic shave in Italy (didn’t have the opportunity the one time I went), but stateside I feel like the opportunities are going to continue to shrink unfortunately.

This thread reminds me of my former barber. He was an old school barber with 50+ years of experience. He was semi-retired for most of the years that he cut my hair, my son's hair as he was growing up, my oldest grandson's hair, and my step-father's hair. This was a barber who used a lather machine(probably his only option due to health codes), but he cleaned up the back of my neck with a real straight razor as well as cleaning up all around with that same straight. I remember that straight razor seemingly just wiping away the hair without once catching any mole or other imperfections on my skin. I was always amazed.
Since I've become a traditional wet shaver, I truly wish I would've taken Everett up on his offer of a shave just once! Oh well, he's retired now. I can say that Everett the barber was a true gentleman and a master of his craft!
