I switched back to my first DE razor - an EJ DE89 - for my last two shaves and got really comfortable shaves with zero irritation (particularly the neck). I forgot how smooth this razor was. I may make this my primary razor again.

The DE89 was my first razor and still remains in my den. It is my backup to the AS-D2. With an Astra SP blade it provides a close and smooth shave. I still prefer the AS-D2 for it's mildness, but both are excellent razors. There is one other razor that I had great success with, and that was the iKon 101. The only problem was I didn't like the open comb side at all, which to me defeated the purpose of having a DE, as I like to use both sides to not have to rinse the razor as often. I asked iKon if they ever plan to offer a 101 with safety bar on both sides but they do not.

Shaven in the Past
IMV the Rocket 500HD meets that critera. My Parat and 49 Rocket are only a hair behind the 500 in smoothness.

Don't we all? Trouble is, like everything in shaving, every aspect of it is YMMV! I'd almost bet that you could give me the exact same kit that provided you with your 'ultimate' shave and I may well find it less appealing to me. Not to say that reviews are worthless; I read them assiduously and when the reviews begin to be lopsidedly in favor of particular gear for the preponderance of reviewers, then I'm all ears and the likelihood of my trying the item increases, dramatically.

I was going through my razors tonight. I found a tech I knew that I had, but I haven't used it in years. I believe this is the tech model I have: http://mr-razor.com/Rasierer/Tech/1951%2...20Tech.JPG

is this similar to the model that was being talked about that is mild & efficient?

You haven't used anything as mild and efficient as, "The Shavernator."

The camera guy had me LMMFAO. If you want to see how it works (and not watch the guy "shave" lol) go to the last few minutes.

I haven't tried that particular Tech, so I'm not sure how it would compare to the pre-war fat handle Tech that I was suggesting.  From mr-razor.com, this was the one I have and consider mild and efficient: 1938-1941_Tech.  The jpg says 1938-1945 on it, but the url says 1938-1941.  I didn't think these were being produced past 1941.  According to B&B Wiki: Early_Tech, they weren't.

wingdo suggested the Gillette Super Speed Red Tip.  I just used my '55 SS Red Tip for about a week not too long ago and remembered how much I enjoyed shaving with it.  I browsed through the B&B Razor Blade Gap DB you linked earlier(Double-Edged_Safety_Razors_Ranked_by_Blade_Gap ) and found it interesting that the blade gap for the Gillette SS Red Tip is listed as 0.73mm, while the Feather AS-D2 gap is 0.74mm.  Now, I realize that this is not a parameter to judge mild vs. aggressive, but it's interesting none the less.  I do wish there were a DB that listed blade exposure. That would tell a lot more of the story.

OK, I've rambled on enough.  I say dust off that '51 black handle Tech, Andrew, and let us know what you think of it now!

I bought one off of a member here a couple of months ago. It is in the mild but efficient category for sure. The handle is a little long for me, but it's now my travel razor.

I can't even tell you how many schick kronas and fat handled techs I've sold over the years.  I'd say no less than 10, and I never tried a single one, spare for the '51 tech I have now.  it's been so long since I used that though, I forget how it shaves other than techs being mild.
