I have ordered some menthol crystals from Amazon to jazz up a couple of my old shaving soaps that have lost their fragrances over the years. Those of you with experience, please give me some guidance about how to dissolve the crystals (alcohol? witch hazel? water?) for this purpose. The online image shows a foil packet, and I'm not sure if the crystals are discrete chunks or sort of shredded.
Thanks!

Most likely they will be in crystal form. They will dissolve in anything. I would use WH and use as small an amount as you can get away with. I put menthol crystals in nearly all my AS splashes, but have never put them in soap. Good luck and let us know the results.

Menthol crystals dissolve into alcohol or essential oils, and they can be dissolved into water or oil at their melting point of 111.2ºF.

Thanks for the information, guys. I'll report later on my experiment.

I bought the 3 oz. bag. And it is lab quality. That means it's hella strong. Careful. I watched vids of people putting 3-4 Crystal into the mix. But as usual. I went and added 7-8. Wow. Waaay cold. Lol. The menthol does take time to break down into solution so one must be patient. Since your doing soap a small amount of water and pulverized menthol added will need to be mixed in. I suppose croaps would be easiest for this. Can't wait to see what you do.

I used the crystals for the first time this morning. I dissolved about 1/8 tsp of them in 1-1/2 tsp of very hot water and then pipetted that mix into my lather as I built it in my scuttle bowl. The lather was quite cold on my skin, and I liked it. I think I got the ratio perfect for me with the first try. I certainly would not want to use the menthol every day, but once every couple weeks will be fine.

Glad to hear you found the right ratio, it can be difficult because if you use too much it can get crazy cold. You can also mix the crystals in glycerin with a small amount of alcohol for menthol glycerin that can be added to any lather. It is fun to experiment with them and many soap scents work well with the menthol.

Actually, I decided that the first ratio was slightly too cold, so I increased the amount of hot water to 2 tsp this morning, and it was better.

Yea it can be potent stuff. Glad to hear you were able to tone it down a bit.
