Maintaining your razors.

Are there any tricks to cleaning DE safety razors? Right now, I use a tooth brush and hand soap to scrub them every couple of weeks.

That should be fine for a simple cleaning. For a deeper clean, I use Scrubbing Bubbles.

You're doing what I do when mine start getting that soap scum build up on them, except I use Walmart's store brand Scrubbing Bubbles. Make's them look clean and shiny again.

for cleaning them, that should be fine. you could also try scrubbing bubbles as Freddy mentioned or a toothpaste that doesn't have any grit in it.

another option, especially if you have a few to clean, is to use an ultrasonic cleaner. be warned though, if you're trying to clean up some older razors using this method, their plating is usually pretty thin and the agitation from the ultrasonic cleaning might wear it off.

if you want to polish them, use flitz or maas with a microfiber cloth/towel.

Soap, water and toothbrush for me. When I get really bored, I'll use some Maas on them to get them shiny. Used razors get cleaned with Barbicide, Soap and Maas.

I agree with all the above. With my new razors, such as my Merkur 34c or any of my Muhle razors, I rinse with hot water as soon as I am done using them, then towel dry them (with the blade removed of course )

When I have used my vintage TTOs enough that even after rinsing them after use doesn't get all the "gunk" out, I use Scrubbing Bubbles, then a good cleaning with J.R Watkins dish soap.

And, when I acquire a used vintage razor, I use J.R Watkins dish soap first for an initial cleaning, followed by Scrubbing Bubbles, then a ten minute, and no longer than TEN minute dunk in Barbicide (Any longer and you can cause damage), then a final cleaning again with J.R Watkins dish soap. (followed by a gentle dremel polishing with Flitz or Never Dull, Flitz on gold plating, Never Dull on chrome, aluminum, etc). Then they are cleaned, sterilized and polished to my satisfaction!

I'd say if anyone is having to ask, just use "SOAP & WATER". Avoid the Scrubbing Bubbles, avoid the ultra sonic, avoid toothpaste etc.

Along with some elbow grease (not literally for you 20y old guys) and some liquid hand soap or liquid dish soap, it's all you need.

You run the risk of damaging your razor if you use something with bleach or abrasives etc, not to mention some of the gold lacquered razors can have their finish rubbed off.

I rinse and wipe them down after each shave. Only takes an extra minutes, they don't get as much build up which necessitates a more abrasive cleaning.
