I have both the Maggard open comb V2 and closed comb V3. I've had the open comb for a while and I've been using it exclusively because of the fantastic shaves I've been getting with it.

Just to have a milder option I recently got the closed comb V3 but to my surprise I found it to have about the same efficiency but a more aggressive feel with a lot more blade exposure. I can definitely feel the blade on my face and it seems to give a little irritation.

Does anyone else have experience with both razor heads?

Did you get the V3 or V3A?

I have all three heads. I prefer the V2 OC and V3a over the V3. IMHO, OC and V3a are much more efficient and comfortable. I give the OC a slight edge over the V3a but this is mainly just because I've used the OC more. They're great heads and for the money you can't beat them.

Only have V3A and it's too harsh. Looks pretty but too harsh.

I have both, and find the V3 safety bar head to be more mild. A have a blade or two that cause just a bit of irritation in the V2 open comb while giving a close comfortable shave in the V3.

But do you feel the blade more on your skin than the open comb? I do and that's what surprised me. I tried it with Astra SP's which are my favorites, but maybe I should try it with a different blade.

I am not sure, I will have to check. I do know that the Astra SPs feel very harsh, to my face, in both the V2 and V3, but are smooth in my vintage Gillette. I found the Personna Platinum (Red Personna) to feel the best and shave the closest, with the Gillette Silver Blue and Gillette 7 O'clock green, to be great also; again, this was my face, which has rosacea and can get irritated with me and technique mishaps quickly!

I shaved this morning with the V3, day 3 on a Silver Blue blade, after using that same blade for 2 days in a Merkur 34C (a fairly mild razor, I believe). Today's shave was close and comfortable, removing more stubble more easily than the 34C. I know that doesn't answer your question, and I hope to do a comparison soon, but my schedule for tomorrow calls for up and out quickly, so I usually shave with a mild razor and more forgiving razor. The open comb tends to let me know it's there if I am not focusing on shaving!

Thanks for your response. I'll try the V3 with a different blade some time soon.

The V3 is my favorite DE razor head. Yes, there is a fair amount of blade feel on the skin, but this in itself is not necessarily a bad thing. Once you refine your technique with this razor, it provides an extremely close and smooth shave, in my humble opinion.

With that said, I have never used the V3A nor the V2, so I have no comparison to that...

For me, the V3 fits beautifully between my 40s Super Speed and my 20s Old Type. Extremely efficient, but not as aggressive as the OT. Very smooth, but not as mild as the SS.

I find it performs just beautifully with a Gillette 7:00 green or yellow or a Gillette Silver Blue. Personna blues also perform very well, but just behind the Gillette blades for me and my scalp...
