Have they made changes to their scents? When I tried a few last year, they were all synthetic smelling and very strong (candle shop)... maybe I had the wrong ones!

I personally dont have any issue with synthetics when they are done well and I dont find it to be too strong.  Im sure not much has changed in a year and its just a matter of YMMV.

That was my experience as well. Loved the lather though

Synthetics or naturals, I'm okay with either. If I like the scent that's what matters to me and MacDuffs scents I think are great. Most of their scents seem to be kind of abstract which makes them unique and another reason I enjoy them. I think I have about a dozen or more tubs with Bad Santa being one of my favorite. Another one that stands out for me is Prairie Rum Runner which is MacDuffs take on bay rum, if it was created in Canada. I also want to say that their Cabin Series of scents are really nice too.

Both Bad Santa and Christmas Cabin will be year round soaps for me. Love them both. Scent is very subjective. I haven’t smelled them all but I have smelled quite a few and “candle shop” has never come to mind.

I'll have to give it another shot, it actually was at least a couple years back, now that I think about it.
I think my issue was that the scents I bought were supposed to be of natural things (trees, mountains), where I'd expect to smell essential oils. But I just got the impression that they were prefabricated fragrance oils. Agreed, that's not always a bad thing and can be done right... but just not in this situation (soap that's supposed to smell like natural things, as I said above).

For those who are not aware, MacDuffs also makes exclusive soaps and aftershave for some of their vendors, like my selection for this morning.

I know the ones you're talking about and I agree with you - he was having some issues with his base (v3) messing up the scents.  If you leave them uncapped for an hour or two it would dissipate.  V4 is not only a much better base but it doesn't have that problem of messing up the scent.

American Vintage is a very nice scent. However, I do agree with other posters who have noted that the base is very soft, almost too soft.

Yeah, I agree, although for me it doesn't matter. I bowl lather so whether I load form the tub or scrape some up for the lather bowl it's the same. I regularly switch between loading from the tub or digging up some for the bowl. I loaded from the puck today for a very long count. What I wiped up with my finger from the puck and spread on my whiskers was enough to create plenty of lather for a 3 pass shave. Then I had a brush with 3x as much soap to build a lather from. So from now on I'll be scraping up some for the bowl.

About the scent. Leather scents from frags or soaps are down on the bottom of my dislike pile of notes. AV is the first soap with a leather note that I really like. With only a couple of uses, leather is pretty much the only note I can actually identify. The rest is just a pleasant background scent.
