Has anyone seen one of these before?  I hope collectors on the forum can shed some light on what branch of service these were meant to be issued to, if any were issued, what ranks, what classification, etc.?  I have had this set for years but haven't seen any others since.  It is a Gillette Bulldog Military Set, nickel plated case, razor serial date 1918 but other than that I have no info on it.  The tray holding the razor and blade cases swings out when the case is stood upright.  There is no lining.[Image: FRChVsd.jpg][Image: t1tMaXi.jpg][Image: ulMpSsW.jpg][Image: BNlFE14.jpg][Image: pSoTGAt.jpg]

I’ve seen my share of Bulldogs in my time collecting but I’ve never seen a Military version so my suggestion would be to reach out to the Razor Emporium and Matt and if he doesn’t know then I’m sure Captain Murphy or just Cap would know. You can also try looking on Mr Razor.

That’s about all I’ve got.

Good Hunting my friend.

That's a nice sturdy kit, looks good.
I'm no help here but been looking around pretty hard for a Gillette 1920s Tuckaway.
If I run across one of those bulldogs in a box, like that, I'll let you know where.

What flavor of Tuckaway are you seeking?

Looking for a new improved to try, probably prefer silver.
Really the long handles might work too just as good to try.
I've never used one and like my single ring a lot, I really care about boxes and all that right now.
Edit: something that looks pretty decent with straight teeth.

I saw that one video of Matts at razor emporium, said those bulldogs were officers razors?

If you are just looking to try one I'll be happy to send you a set to evaluate.  Are you in the USA?

That's very kind, yes I'm in Missouri.
I have a WTB up elsewhere, let me see what happens with that. It's always fun to try razors.
I might take you up on that offer later if nothing come up,  that's very nice.

Are you sure it is a military set, let alone military issued? The cases usually have something like service set, military set, navy set, property of the US Army or Navy on them somewhere. Any set made in that time period should have some indication if it is and that one shouldn't be any exception. Also is that razor made in the US or England, that swing out design on the case looks like it is a British case not something they did on the US stuff. The early case pre 1920 didn't say made in England on them either when they were so it is a possibility that case could be British and if the razor is American issued a mismatch. With thats said things like the service set where marketing gimmicks and sold to the public and not actual military issued sets unless they also had property of US Army or Navy on them.

I'm confident that it is a military set (at least designed for the military) but I haven't seen any documentation other than a Waites Compendium reference.  Someone noted that these were for officers and not enlisted but I can't find that reference.  It's definitely not for enlisted ranks.  I have the suspicion that since there is no lining it could have been designed for medical personnel to use (the whole set could be autoclaved together) or for in the field where a cloth lining would get contaminated or otherwise dirty.  If any were issued surely there would be more in the civilian market by now. Maybe Gillette can help me solve the mystery. I won't hold my breath since they are very tightlipped about giving out any marketing info.

Edit: USA vs. British: The case bottom pic above shows Made in the USA diamond logo. Don't the British Bulldogs have an opposite twist?

Nope, I don't think so but not sure. The Aritocrats, TTO went the other way. My Canadian has the same twist and is stamped around the outside of the barrel bottom area 'BULL DOG' and under that CAN PAT MAR 7.05
