This is the only synthetic that I've used and liked enough to keep, and it's now my travel brush: [Image: wRZ9yFx.jpg]

Despite this being a thread populated by synthetic brush lovers I’m going to do what so many seem to enjoy doing on my bay rum lovers thread, that is, post how much I don’t like synthetic brushes. I’ve tried to like them but just can’t. I’ve tried several of the modern synthetic brushes and while they are definitely better than they used to be, for me they just don’t compare to badger or boar bristle brushes. Not even close. My advice in synthetic brushes is, try them if you like but there’s nothing wrong with you if you don’t like them. No matter how many guys swear by them.

I'm an adamant synth user, because they work so well for me. Very few deny their ability to do the job, even if there's room to nitpick whether they work better or worse, etc.

However, the best description I've seen from folks who hate synth brushes is, "They work, but have no soul". It's kinda true, if you think about it. They're somewhat disconnected from the typical process and effort, and lack the standard feel of boar and badger. They don't break in and look foreign compared to either of the above.

I can absolutely see how many don't like synths. As always, the hobby is a 'ymmv' and a 'do what works for you' sort of thing.

In case it wasn't clear I posted the Blues Brothers video to provide an example of the sort of soul that badger and boar brushes have juxtaposed against the obvious lack of soul of the synthetic brushes.  Big Grin

For knot and handle, my fave so far is the Stirling 2-Band Synthetic.
Decent backbone, soft tips, very reasonable price, love the handle's Mae West silhouette and colour scheme.

The knot seems very much like the APShaveCo Tuxedo, I guess, but my AP Tux is in a long handle so I find it difficult to compare.

The SynBad is supposed to be like a Badger, I guess, but I find it to be more like a boar, if anything.

I have tried lots of synthetic brushes, sold them all after finding the Alpha Outlaw 28mm Synthetic. The G4 knot is amazing for face lathering.
