Lawn Mowers

Does anyone use the battery-powered lawn mowers? If so, would you recommend them?

My Toro finally gave out on me after fifteen seasons and it's time for a new one. My wife, for whatever reason, is just set on having one of these battery powered mowers. And to be fair, she'll mow about half the time because my schedule is most busy during the spring/summer months. And I'm sure most of you know...happy wife, happy life

But if these things are just POS, i would really like to know.

I recall reading about them (I believe in Consumer Reports) and they are recommended for a quarter acre or less. Also, they don't do well on hilly land so if your property is flat you should be ok. One of my buddies works at a local hardware store and he said each time you recharge the battery it loses a little bit of charge (capacity fades) and overall they are not as aggressive as gas powered. But... I have never used one so I don't have first hand knowledge.

I'd be worried about the battery catching fire or something with a mower. Where are all of these batteries ending up when. They wear out too? Is it the same thing as in cellphone​s?

I hadn't looked at the reel mower. A friend of mine had that type of mower years ago but his lot was only about a tenth of an acre. I'm not sure how I would feel about using this consistently on a half acre.

They should be recycled. Lithium is almost a precious metal, but it definitely shouldn't be in a landfill.

Are they the same as what's in a cellphone? Well, yes and no. They could be the same chemistry, but the cells you refer to and heard of are bad Li-Ions either purchased from a supplier who couldn't make good ones or just not quality cells purchased at an attractive price. One needs to know what one is buying; Samsung didn't. Unfortunately in a battery pack that just isn't possible unless one dissects one. They could be garbage or quality cells. I've been using Li-Ions in flashlights for awhile now with no problems. The first cells I purchased out of ignorance were just garbage. I recycled them and learned my lesson. Now only quality cells. But it also doesn't end there. The charger must also be quality as should the circuitry inside the battery pack.

I would stay with a known brand and steer clear of Swordfish brand or the like.

Very nice! Now, I just wish I had a lawn so that I would have an excuse to buy one and use it.
