My PayPal draft for the Athena was $209.72. Just an FYI. I think they are still available for this price via IG directly from Theo.

Now, we have a US distributor. He needs to make a few $$$ too. No? I don't think he has even mentioned a price. Just low $200s.

I'm not sure how we got here but I do agree with Mr. Moriarty on all points but 1 minor addition of my own. SS can achieve a true mirror. Bronze, titanium, and brass can get to 95%ish and it is hard to do. This info is from DuFour during my chats with him. Try ordering a mirror polished bronze Wolfman. You can, but it is going to come with disclaimers. I have mirror bronze DuFour razors in SS, Ti and bronze. The finish of the Athena is just a good, to my eye. If you consider the Athena also has a two tone finish, I would say the Athena is better.

The Athena is quite an exceptional value below $250. I'm not sure how that is not apparent.

Once Theo get established, I think his prices will rise, as they should. He has a great product and they can't be easy to make.

I would like to see, selfishly, limited production on all of the models. Keep the innovation in materials, function, and design fresh in bringing new models to market.

All of this is just one man's opinion. I am not employed by Razor Co, Theo, Mr Moriarty, USPS, Fed Ex, or anything remotely associated with this razor. I am also wrong more than I am right, ask Mrs. LOOT.

I agree my comment was based on someone saying he had pulled the razor from direct sales and planned to increase the price, if thats not the case than that's great. I dont think TRC increasing the cost to cover their loss on freight is an issue at all since you would end up paying it anyway buying it direct.

I also personally wasnt trying to say at its current price is not a good price for the razor, i havent tried it. I was just saying that once the cost breaks into the range of 220ish you start having to compete against some well established manufactures and people are going to find a lot of information about those razors easier. As you said I think if the quality is there he will increase the price and if there is enough word of mouth people will be happy to buy it.

I made a simple observation that the price seemed to have jumped just before my purchase and everyone got their knickers in a wad. I NEVER said it wasnt worth more. Always annoying when the ones that have theirs at the reduced price feel the need to not just make their point but try to make others feel they are cheap because they were just hoping for the same good deal. Hopefully I'll be able to get one but it isn't the end all beats all razor. If I do I certainly won't be bullying those that follow and say they should be willing to pay more because it's worth more and he has to be able to make a go of it in his business. I hope he limits production so the price will go higher and it will be exclusive etc etc. Good grief, done and heading back under my rock........

Looks like a beautiful razor. I like the idea of a razor without a lot of blade exposure, as I generally like a smooth-feeling shave on the face. Which brings me to my only concern about this razor: the safety bar itself seems quite thin/narrow, so that the part of the baseplate that touches your skin is almost sharp. I have had other razors like that in the past (the Mamba, for one), and I never really cared for that feeling. In my experience, razors that have a fat and/or rounded baseplate almost always feel smoother on the skin during the shave (think Merkur Futur or the Stahly, for example).

Dave mentioned the corners of the baseplate are sharp; obviously those could be rounded off, but one of the reasons they feel sharp and occasionally catch on the skin it likely not because there is a 90-degree corner there but because the baseplate is thin. In other words, with a fatter baseplate, completely squared off corners wouldn't present any problem at all.

Now the thin baseplate may also positively affect the weight and balance, so there may be very good reasons for it to be shaped that way, and perhaps when the razor is at the correct angle it feels smooth. If so, the corners could just be sanded down a bit, or, in a second version, the CNC programming could be changed to round the corners very slightly.

Finally, there are those of us, like myself, that really love to have nice razors to shave with, but don't give a rat's butt about accessories such as stands, presentation boxes, and the like. Agreed that it is nice-looking box, but I would never put it into the box, or store it in the box. I have a place for my razors, and it would go there. I never understood stands, either, but that's a story for another day. A nice box makes sense if you are displaying the razor, as some collectors do. I don't display any of my razors and am not a collector. I only want a razor, I don't want a booklet, a box, a stand, etc., etc. I wonder if he would ever consider selling the razor WITHOUT the box? If that could take a few bucks off the price, all the better.

Again, these are just my thoughts/ramblings. I am probably in the minority.

It depends what you mean by the safety bar. The safety bar is not thin - it is quite broad, and curved, but it has slots in it which terminate at a solid, base with a sharp edge at the bottom. Because of the curve it is the part of the safety bar with the slots that touches your face, not the solid edge at the bottom. But Dave in KY is right that if you go too steep of an angle then it is possible to catch the corners on your face (but if you do that you would also have the razor at an angle where the blade cannot touch your face and it wouldn’t shave).

I hope I explained that well. Yes, you can catch the corners on your skin if you have the angle too steep for shaving, or if you push the safety bar into your face, but as Dave also pointed out, it isn’t really an issue in practice unless you are careless (and even then it isn’t likely to scratch or irritate your skin). I agree with him that it might be nice to round those corners off all the same, though it wouldn’t look quite as good. I do know what you mean with some other razors with thin, sharp safety bars - the Smart-Helix Apollo is one - and for me this isn’t like those. YMMV, as always.

Maybe a pic helps to show better how the slotted safety bar is shaped.

I have no dog in this fight but as someone on the outside looking in one thing that really bugs me about someone that puts in the time to make any razor whether it shaves good or not, it's the fact that they push a gaudy box on you as part of the deal and give you no option to purchase just the razor without the box!! I can't shave with the box and don't want it as it just takes up space I might or might not have. I know the presentation is nice and all but again the box does me no good and I don't want it... I passed on the Raw Shaving razor because you had to take the box as they wouldn't ship it without it.... Like I said to start, I have no dog in this fight but it was just something that came to mind and when someone said something about pricing I though maybe they could offer it without the $50 box and save someone some money on the purchase!! Just a thought I had...

If you don't have one, you can't comment. Board rules.

Posting Freak
Gents, I have one and have shaved about 3 times with it.

My predilection is for mild Shavers. [feather, ATT M1, Karve A&B, Overlander, CG Lvl 1, etc]. This shaves more aggressively than those. Surprisingly light given it's dimensions & shape. I thought it has an odd feedback while shaving. Honestly, feels like a 'holllow' razor. It IS a thing of beauty : I like the box/presentation, and will use that razor/box as a travel tool. Would i buy it again? Maybe. It is probably under-priced. I am very curious what the community will really think about how it shaves once the newness dissipates. I feel like my Overlander is far superior [remember my preferences regarding blade feel]. But of course, the law must be mumbled : YMMV.
