L&L Grooming - Brushes, Soaps, Aftershaves - Now Available at Maggard Razors!

Use a stiffer, wetter brush when loading L&L soaps...  Much easier that way.  Soft brushes tend to twist up in the sticky, thick proto-lather.

I don't mind the sticky or gooey photo lather. I will try loading with a bit more water in the badger knot but I typically don't use (even have) stiff badger brushes which is about what I only use. I know L&L is very thirsty but I normally try to avoid "semi-wet" loading because I find it can be hard to keep the texture bubble free.

It may sound counterintuitive but I've actually found L&L loads nice and easy after a slight bloom. It softens it up and makes for easier loading and it isn't so sticky. I've tried to dry it out and even after a few days it didn't change much so I decided to soften it a bit instead.

I might try that soon. My issue is I am more comfortable with firmer soaps. It's nice when I am done loading to scrape the last bit of photo lather off of the puck. This can be done with SV, Mike's, B&M White Label, and most recently I added Grooming Dept. The firmer consistency is my preference at this point when deciding if I want another soap.

I am trying to remember the last time normal handled Declaration Brushes were released. Does anyone recall?

I actually like the sticky proto-lather. To me, it’s a sign that I’m loading actual soap. More water can always be added into the mix later, but if you add too much right away, well, then it’s just there…

I really dislike soaps that burst into an uncontrollable, airy foam at first sight of water. L&L Grooming soaps are the exact opposite of that.

I would agree with your preference away from airy foam developing from a formulation. There is another American artisan made shave soap that I like to use in a similar way.

The question next is how thirsty is it going to be before breaking down on your face or head?

I haven’t actually pushed an L&L soap (or very many others, for that matter) to the breaking point. (I guess I should experiment more). Maybe someone else can chime in on this matter.
