KAIs can boost the efficiency of some razors because they are wider than normal, which increases blade exposure. They are smooth, but middle-of-the-road in sharpness.
Bic Chrome Platinum can boost the efficiency of some razors because they come out of the package very sharp, and they hold their edge very well. They are standard width, and not the smoothest.
Shimming the blade by trimming the edges off an old blade can also help, but I’ve never stuck with this approach for long.
Which of those will work best to boost a mild razor is a matter of trial and error and personal preference.
For a razor that is more inherently efficient, I like a more balanced blade that is smooth, sharp, and holds an edge well. Persona Reds work well for me, but there are many fine choices if you aren’t trying to push a mild razor into greater efficiency than it was designed for.
