Janus razors Modern Machined Stainless Steel Adjustable Toggle

This was part of the new update I got today:

"All the testers loved the heft, length and balance confirming what I have always believed – a heavier razor steadies the hand, and tools with longer handles are easier to use. Try using a hammer or crescent wrench with a short handle, and you will appreciate the leverage from a longer handle."

I completely disagree with only this part.  I thought I liked heavier razors with long handles when I first started with a DE.  That's because I was used to the long handles on carts.  A short handle is easier for me to control and maneuver.  Still curious to hear what others think when they get theirs.  Pre orders begin in April I guess.

I agree with you and I think the rationale is silly. The reason wrenches are long is to increase the torque applied to a bolt/nut. Hammers are long to increase the length of the arc the head travels, thereby increasing its speed and momentum.  Shaving doesn't require torque or hitting things hard. Of course the Janus guys know this (he's obviously incredibly sharp).

However, the majority of wet shaving customers love longer handles. And, at the end of the day, we've got to sell these things so having the long handle makes sense. I love this project and I'm looking forward to the outcome! This guy is killing it.

Pricing was addressed earlier in the thread. It is expensive. I would argue that the price is justified or at least fair. That doesn’t mean I think $500 razors make a lot of sense, but he’s not out of line to charge it. Small batch complicated designs are just costly to produce.

I totally agree. One needs to remember that this person spent two years of his own time designing, modifying, and setting up production for this razor. He did not get funding from Kickstarter or expect to making a killing on this project. This definitely was not a project designed for the mass market. Remember that this is not a standard three piece design.

The worst thing that can happen is that after all of this work, the price is too low and the venture goes out of business. Then the ones that were sold will be resold for 4 times the original price.

I agree that what he did is impressive and comes from passion. His razor is a work of art and an engineering marvel. It’s just beyond my price range. I wasn’t knocking his efforts. No point in complaining!

The latest update is basically setting the stage for a Kickstarter Campaign. The date set for the Kickstarter is set for April 30th. There is no info or time frame if the project is successfully funded on when a projected time frame for the product to be ready for those that back the campaign. The founder states in the update that the KS Campaign is used as a gauge for demand so that hopefully he can at least meet the minimum requirement for tooling and production. Hmmm.... At anywhere between $500-$600 and up, looks like this can be rather iffy.

At least he spent the two years getting the razor close to production before starting a Kickstarter campaign instead of the other way around. I have to see what the KS price is first before deciding if I can afford to miss a mortgage payment. It does look real good though.

It definitely does look amazing and I'm really wanting to get a modern version of the Gillette Toggle especially with the methodical and engineering thought process that went behind this. I'm just not so sure if there's enough interest from the shaving public. Let's face it, the $$$ is in the upper echelon of niche razors. It's not for everyone. We'll see how the KS Campaign goes and if it looks like it might be funded rather early, I just might take my Christmas present a little early.....
