I saw this nice razor on Craigs list for 40 dollars. is it likely to be any good, what sort of things should I look out for? The case is cool.

Trout, it looks like a Gillette Old Type so I guess it dates from the 1910s-1920s somewhere.  I have one and I get excellent and enjoyable shaves from it.  If you are just starting out with traditional wet shaving, you may find this a wee bit aggressive.  From the photo, it is hard to note the condition of the razor.  Does the handle have a hairline crack (more common than you might think), are all of the teeth straight (a fall on a hard surface could cause them to bend), can the razor be cleaned up fairly easily?  As for the price, I don't know what would be considered fair for a user grade (as opposed to pristine) razor of that type as it has been quite a few years since I purchased mine and I have never dealt with Craigslist. Perhaps others will chime in about that.

I think that's actually about right if not a little high for something in that condition. Did you get it?

I can't tell you about the price since I've been out of acquisition mode for some time now. But they are the only Gillette razors I keep in the cabinet. When I want a close shave and I'm not in the mood to handle an R41 as it needs to be handled I reach for one of my pre '21 Gillette's. Yes, I can tell the difference between a pre'21 Gillette and a post '21 Gillette during the shave; it's like a Ferrari as compared to a station wagon. I never thought the slight difference in cap thickness would amount to much, but all my post '21 Gillette's are in "mothballs".

It's one of the best Gillette's ever made IMO.

Just don't get into a bidding war. Know your high price, set it, and let the computers fight it out at digital speed. It's OK to insert your bid 10 seconds before the auction ends. Yeah, I know... sniping... But I always bid low and far more times than not lost when the computers fought it out. Ebay is like dating. You bid on many to get the very few. At least that's the way it was for me when I was bidding on Ebay. :-)

Short answer from me. The old type rocks and I have no love for the "new".

First and most important, make sure you clean and sterilize this razor in alcohol and Barbicide and make sure the teeth are intact and not bent. These razors give nice shaves but are tad small.

Scrubbing Bubbles and a tooth brush will clean and sanitize it for use. If you want it fairly shiny use some NeverDull Cotton wadding on it before hand. should clean right up.
