This thread quickly turned to a Gem MMOC from the IKoN Tech

I am a "born again" MMOC believer as of yesterday, after  having tried using it unsuccessfully several times in the past and having nicks cuts and weepers and the "tore my face" episodes. I  decided to give it another shot after reading a lot on the technique and kept the razor - "flat against the face", zero pressure and slow short strokes.

I got one of the best BBS shaves of my life and once I got the handle on the technique and felt more confident - it was just like any other DE in moving around my face contours , but being mindful.

It's nearly 24 hours now and it's time for Monday shave but I think the BBS lasted for quite a while yesterday. I guess I'll use the Micromatic clog pruf today as there isn't as much stubble to clean as usual !

I was using a Personna  Gem PTFE coated blade on its third day !

Nice! Can't wait to get my hands on an MMOC. Found three GEMs at the antique store yesterday. A 1914 (style, probably manufactured a year or two later), a 1924 style (manufactured a few years earlier -- the one that essentially turned into the "24) and a Bullet. Today I found a Clog Pruf in a dark corner of my shaving cabinet. So I've got all the significant models except the OC. Alas, looking forward to taking them out for a spin tomorrow.

Will run 'em against the Ikon Tech, which has recently become my favorite razor. (At least until tomorrow anyway.)

While I was at it with this thread, I found a nice gold tone MMOC on the auction site for $12 and asking to be picked up. I happily obliged !

It's amazing one still get these gems of razors at such price points, lesser still in a brick and mortar antique stores !

You inspired me to get one too. In my case, a pretty nasty looking one for $8 shipped.

The Swedish Matador, Ikon Tech, and Barbasol Floating Head are all examples of razors whose efficiency and aggressiveness stem from exposure which is a function of a very short guard span. Personally I find the Matador the best of the three, much smoother than the Tech (which tugs on my head), and better handling than the Barbasol. I'm not sure anyone answered the initial question - isn't it self-evident? The ikon Tech is ikon's interpretation of the Gillette Tech. Significantly more aggressive than the Gillette Tech which is a bit of a cream puff but still a nice razor.

It's a wildly different "interpretation" then. It does have a safety bar and two lather slots -- which were not unique to the Tech (hello Barbasol again) --, but lacks its signature feature which was the stamped baseplate . Other than that I took Greg's naming it the Tech as a joke.

No. I couldn't disagree more. It has nothing in common with the Gillette Tech, but the name.
The Gillette Tech is a stamped brass, nickel or gold plated razor; the iKon Tech is made of sintered aluminum.
The Gillette has significant safety bar overhang, while the iKon has none at all. For all practical purposes, it's a DE shavette.
The Gillette is gentle and forgiving; the iKon is rough and unforgiving.
The Gillette shaves best at a steep angle, whereas the iKon requires that you ride the topcap (lest you draw blood).
In my opinion, those two razors have nothing in common, but the name; a name that Greg Kahn appropriated.

it depends on whether or not the antique store knows what they have, or if they're just slapping a price on the razors because they believe that since they're really old, surely they're worth a lot of money. I've seen both in my travels in various states around the US...some are grossly overpriced and then some are way underpriced. some are fairly close to what the going rate is.

for example, I bought a toggle in very good shape for $60 in an antique shop in San Antonio, TX 2 years ago I believe. I flipped it for almost $200 on ebay..

I know, that's why I said "interpretation". I agree with all of your points 100%. I have no idea what Greg at ikon was thinking when he named that razor Tech. Maybe he thought he'd get some sales from people who thought they'd love to have a modern stainless steel razor like their old Tech. Big surprise. Eventually the word got out and it was buyer beware ever since - I bought one after thinking that I'd evolved my technique sufficiently after 5 years or so of wet shaving. Well, no amount of evolution could prepare me for that razor. Its the nastiest razor in my possession. It should have a warning etched on the topcap. Big Grin
