No matter how hard I try, I always get irritation on the third pass on the neck when I go against the grain. I use a Wilkinson Sword Classic, a 24mm knot Maggard synthetic shaving brush, a cream(Palmolive, D'amaris, Denim) and a D'amaris aftershave. Anyone else who has irritation after the ATG pass? Could use some advice.

The solution is simple.

Don't do an ATG pass and you'll be fine.

The only shaves ever experienced without neck residual neck irritation and redness have come from using Ethos soap. Have used some of best soaps on the market including Grooming Dept (which is easily second best by some margin) but only Ethos has resulted in completely irritation free shaves: face and neck. Have no interest in any shave nor soap company, simply relaying my experience

Use an alum block in post shave and eventually the irritation should go away - if it doesn't try different blades or just don't do ATG.

Most of my under-jaw area is the same, I’ve just stopped going completely against the grain on those areas because it’s not worth the irritation that will inevitably follow. I settle for some light buffing and end up much happier with the results!

Only way I can go ATG on my neck is with a straight.

This is why I'm a WTG/ATG shaver. Two passes and done. That third pass is too much of a good thing for my tender physiognomy.  Rolleyes

Do you stretch skin when you shave ? I use straight razor shaving skin stretching techniques out of force of habit, but it is the way I can get bbs with two passes.

Agree with the others in here, some of our skin just can't handle the ATG pass. The ONLY razor I've been able to do an ATG pass with and not end up with irritation is the 0.68 Razorock Game Changer, but I don't get as good of a shave on the other areas compared to using the more aggressive plate for it. Also like the others, I just don't bother with it anymore. Also, since I started using the more aggressive Game Changer and also the Artist Club 'straight,' I get a much closer shave on the neck with my XTG.

I was in your boat when I started out. I gave up on an atg pass rather risk irritation or ingrowns, until I stumbled on a method to get an irritation free bbs. I do a 2 1/2 pass shave with that last half on my neck where it’s needed.
Try this:
1st pass with the grain.
2nd pass cross grain.
3rd pass opposite cross grain.
Over time experiment with making the final counter cross pass more acute to atg, towards a near atg pass. Take your time and focus technique and growth pattern. I’d much rather have an irritated free shave than a bbs. I’m now able to get remarkably close shaves with zero irritation (especially close with my WM 1.25). Good luck!
