I just got the first badger brush

Hello mates

I had had one synthetic and one boar brush until I got a badger brush two days ago.

I used the new brush this morning and It seemed to need more amount of soap than each of boar and synthetic brushes.

Is it because it holds lots of water in hairs and lather goes into hairs?

That's an interesting question... I too just tried a badger for the first time recently. I didn't notice a huge difference in soap, but it does hold water (like Boars do, too), so there certainly could be some science to it.

Let me ask... Are we talking dollars to dollars? Is the Badger the same size (22, 24, etc MM as the Boar and Synth)? Also, how broken-in is the Boar... Is it new and tightly closed still, or does it have a natural bloom? I'd imagine you have more surface area if it's opened up, and hence more soap grabbed?

So many to choose from who would probably have an answer. You definitely got me curious. I'll be watching this thread.

That’s a great question and I’ll give my best guess although I may be wrong.

In my experience, the size and density (more hairs hold more soap) of the badger knot make a big difference in how much soap it can hold and thus how much more it will grab. Also the stiffer the knot, the easier it may dig in and grab soap, sometimes more soap than is needed.

There are so many variables with badger it would be hard to answer without more details of size, brand and knot you have.

My badger brush is from Oumo

It has Manchurian fan knot and is 26mm.

And the loft is 48mm

I felt it is as same as the boar brush I have because the boar one needs more soap because of the amount of water it holds.

Oddly, find softer and less dense knots (to a point) far easier to lather if less pleasurable on the skin

the new brush is not the same as my existing ones. The boar is smaller than the badger one.

The boar one is a little bit broken in but not completely.

But the badger one opens up and bloom easily because of the feature of being shaped and being still along the direction of its gliding.
