I purchase soaps more on the scent profile than anything anymore. To me a great shave involves the entire spectrum of what your using soap, balm, splash, pre-shave, razor, blade, and even brush are included in that. There are some soaps people swear by that I just don't really get great shaves from (MDC and B&M Excelsior base come to mind) because for my skin they seem to be pretty drying, especially MDC. Also just because Ruds gives them a 100 doesn't mean they are going to be a 100 for everyone. For me personally I find his opinions to be fairly close to mine but there are exceptions. So if you've 'Hit the Wall' be happy in the fact that you can now save some money and know that you still have plenty of stellar soaps that I'm sure you have found and will continue to enjoy.

Just my 2 cents

That's a good word right there.

I'm just now branching out with soaps as my razor fetish has been somewhat subdued. I just have to keep the soap thing in check because it can get out of hand fairly quickly with a multi-year stash and constantly wanting the latest. I could see myself hitting that wall fast.

Since I don't factor in any PSF I am left with pure performance & scent. I really cannot distinguish much if any difference as regards pure performance amongst most good soaps so it's time for me to push away from the artisan "merry go round" as this "oneupmanship" for market relevancy has worn me (and my wallet) down. Time to put down the Kool-Aid.

Sad
PSF?

Good post...provides a little dose of reality...and sanity.

I don’t think the OP or anyone else was trashing wet shaving. It’s just honesty, sometimes we all question what we’re doing and why we’re buying but we love it, at least I do. That’s why we’re here.

It’s so much harder for a new product or a new artisan to make an impact and impress us now than it used to be. The bar has been set pretty high and unless you’re new to wet shaving, the memory of how bad shaving used to be is in the distant past.

Bingo. Hopefully, newcomers will realize that you don't need the latest & greatest to have a great shave as I am sure many came to DE/SE shaving to save money..........initially. I think a lot of rookies are easily convinced that they need an artisan razor, high $$ badger brush + an arsenal of top tier soaps to feel relevant.

Nobody needs to ask my permission to try anything they want AND if they would like to post about it here I'll read their post. I visit this site because for me shaving is a hobby and I really like to see what artisans and vendors are doing but I personally will not be the reason you miss out on the next new soap release. My "wall" has nothing at all to do with my valuation of DFS nor the people who visit here. Have fun. Do your thing. Write a report. Share with others.

If you want to be a sarcastic jerk then why reply?

You're right, that was a bit harsh wasn't it? I just thought it came off as a bit discouraging. I do agree that the difference among these top soaps are miniscule, but part of the fun of this hobby for me is trying new stuff. While I don't buy full tubs of every new thing that comes out, I do always try to at least get a sample of them here and there. After this round of sampling new bases I can agree with you that I could be "done" and be perfectly happy shaving with the soaps I have now. New scents will always be a temptress though and my Achilles heel.
