Honing a Straight on Arkansas stones.

If you start with a nicely honed razor you can go a year or more with just stropping and some refreshes. I use a Shapton 16K for refreshing and love it. Once your razor starts tugging a little, 5 full stokes on the Shapton and maybe 5 strokes on chromium and you're go to go.

I'm not a fan of the Nortons, but they will work and won't break the bank.

Oh nice!

The Naniwa 3/8 is a nice stone but, like most of the Super Stone line, is soft and dishes rather fast. Having said that, it's still a nice stone and I wouldn't get rid of mine

A 3-8k combination is not what I'd recommend for a blade refresh to keep it shave ready. If thats your requirement then a 10-12k or a coti would be more the way to go. A razor finished on an 8k stone(even with a few laps on crox) is rough as a badgers bum IMHO

I've shaved off an 8k, no problem. You are correct though, if all you're wanting is to maintain a little longer between honeings, a finish stone is better. Coti's have a learning curve. I'd stick to something easier and cheaper. Naniwa 12k or ILR or CNat if that's all you're looking to do

Lol, agreed, plus I didn't say you couldn't shave with a blade finished on an 8k stone. Just that I don't find it a very pleasant experience
