Wow
Pretty much.

Not intimidating or harsh feeling at all. Still exhibits very good smoothness for the amount of gap that's exhibited. Don't get me wrong, it's not a mindless shave by any stretch. You just don't need Zen like focus or be a Master Shaolin Monk to get a real good shave. Just sound technique and just pay attention. It'll bite if you don't. Just like most razors will do if you get lazy and don't have much experience with a particular razor...
Sublime early morning shave. Feather is still kicking ass with the Taiga and taking whiskers. Only two other razors in my den that have tamed the Feather in such a way that takes away that initial harsh feeling of the Feather blade feel on the skin. One is the Gillette RFB which is as good as it gets in terms of smoothness & efficiency and the other is the the RR Mamba .70 with it’s super smooth glide and mild feel on the skin. The Taiga bridges both of those for me in one complete package. Honorable mention to the Gibbs Adjustable (the flag bearer of adjustable performance and in my humble opinion slightly ahead of the Taiga in blade feel) but, in my experience the Taiga does it just a wee bit better in giving me the same exact shave feel and quality as from the Gibbs. Another thing that the Taiga has over the Gibbs is the premium fit, feel and craftsmanship and that is unquestioned. And last but, certainly not least is interchangeable base plates between SB & OC. In a class by itself just on that alone. The chink in the armor of this razor? Logistics and availability as it has to come from Russia and wait times are quite long. But, if you can hack out the wait & price, definitely worth considering as a future acquisition. Great day & shaves to all plus, stay safe my shaving brethren.....
Okay, just got a shave in with the Taiga and also used my Mergress XL for a comparison.
Equipment:
Taiga & Mergress XL
New Personna Lab Blue Blade
Simpsons Vetyver & Lavender
GFT Coral Skin Food
I decided to make today's shave one with both razors with 4 turns of the razor from the minimum gap for both for the first pass, then back to the minimum gap and two turns. Right side dedicated to the Mergress XL, and the Taiga to the left side. One thing that surprised me with the Mergress is that it was more efficient at 2 turns, while the Taiga was just a smidge better at four clicks. The Taiga easily had it in terms of smoothness, however. The first pass I could feel the individual hairs tugging with both razors, but the Taiga definitely had the upper hand in that department for the first pass. I think it is my face was more sensitive today.
In terms of which had the better grip, that easily goes to the Taiga again. Knurling of any type beats no knurling, but alum does wonders to help with grip. I likely could have gotten away without it for the Merkur. I was surprised that the Mergress XL felt slightly more maneuverable around the lips than the Taiga. That is not to say the Taiga couldn't accomplish it easily, but something just felt better in this usage between the two. When I went for my second pass at just two clicks things were smoother, and I experienced no discomfort. I believe for my next few shaves I should go back to putting a hot towel over my face to help soften the facial hair. I usually avoid it, but I'm still experiencing problems from a razor bump, and the discomfort with the first pass gives me pause to think I should add it in, despite not liking the extra work usually. No nicks were to be had in either pass, but I did note just a tiny weeper during my second pass on my face with the Taiga.
In terms of handling I had no complaints from either razor. I enjoy razor handles with good knurling, so the Taiga was more pleasing in that regard, but have to say I was impressed with the performance the Mergress XL put up. I believe this can possibly just be bias as I was considering to sell or trade it and I'm looking for reasons to keep it. Seems to be an ever persistent thing to occur. You think of parting with something, and then find reasons you can't part with it.
My usual routine is two passes if that hasn't been gathered by now with the shave reviews I've been doing. First pass WTG, and the second a combination of part WTG/ATG. My facial hair below my chin has its own mind and goes every which direction it pleases. Some days I am able to discern a good pattern and get even better results, but I don't have any real complaints. It gets the job done, and I'm more than happy to part with as much stubble as my face agrees to that day. I should be able to get another shave in come Sunday morning. Possibly even Saturday evening. I'm going to keep said blades in as it has been a little while since I have used the same blade more than once, and know I can get more than one in.
One thing to note on the Taiga, I'm attaching pictures and want to know if the gap is normal under the turning mechanism. I don't seem to remember it being there when it arrived. I took only the top cap off and the bottom twist knob that secures the top cap into place and placed it in my Barbicide jar as is my normal routine when trying a new razor. I did take it apart more so to see how it went together and think I might have made a mistake.
