Help with razors

Hello everyone. Unsure if I should post this here, but the question is mainly about safety razors, so I posted it here.

I have super coarse hairs, porcupine quills if you must know . Kidding aside, I have noticed that I have a hard time with razors with a lot of blade exposure. I used to think that I had sensitive skin, but I have noticed a trend when I shaved with razors that have a lot of blade exposure. My hairs don't seem to cut as...I will use the word effectively since the razors are efficient...they just don't do as good of a job as an EJ89, Progress (lower half settings), etc. This was because there was too much of the hair to be cut at once, so I believe it tugged and caused to pull some hair and irritate the individual hairs. I noticed this when using the Futur, ATT S2, ATT SE1 and now the Blackbird. All of them are smooth and great until I go ATG and then it starts tugging and then feels counter productive. I would have to buff almost 10 or so times just to cut the hair because of the tugging. But I never received this type of tugging with my milder razors that I have tried.

Anyone with the same issue have tried any of other higher end razor than the ones mentioned above and have had excellent shaves with and no tugging problems? I am trying to look for a razor that doesn't have so much exposure but super efficient as my job requires me to be almost BBS every day I am required to work.

I've got very similar hair to yours, but I've only encountered this ATG tendency to tug with my Timeless OC.  To resolve this I used a shallower than normal angle and that seemed to do the trick for me.  For my R41 and ATT H2, I find a steeper angle on all my passes gives me the best results.

If you haven't tried them yet, a Micromatic Clog-Pruf or Open Comb (this one has a reputation that is unwarranted I feel) provide excellent daily BBS shaves for me and my fast-growing wiry stubble.   Might be worth a try - just make sure you use the PTFE coated GEM blades.

My guess would be that the bigger exposure, and thus wider effective range of angles, is what is giving you troubles.

What I mean is...using a mild razor, like an AS-D2, or a Super Speed or Tech, you have a narrow range of effective angles. If you are outside of this range, the razor doesn't cut. Within the effective range, however, the razor cuts very efficiently.

With a more aggressive razor(read: larger blade exposure), you have a much wider range of effective angles, however, the most efficient angle is still going to be fairly narrow.

My guess is with the more aggressive razors, you are using an effective angle that is just outside of the most efficient range. Try adjusting your angle in small increments to see if efficiency can be improved...

MerelyMoe - I will look into the the Micromatics. I did order the Timeless scalloped bar, hope I don't have that issue with mine.

BadDad - I have various different angles along with different amounts of pressure. I made sure I would give a razor a chance before I let it go.

I have purchased a Weber PH as well w/o the blade wave, hopefully one of the razors will fix the issue, be a daily driver and I will be able to find a razor that chokes the heck out of my RAD.

Have you considered trying a good old straight?

HI ronb85 you might want to give the ikon shave craft #102 slant a try - not too much blade exposure but a very comfortable and efficient shave. I love that razor, BBS shave every day.

Yes, I have given a straight a try...however, I don't think they were honed sharply enough. Everything went well until it came time to shave around the lips and chin (the thickest whiskers on my face).
I do plan on sending them to someone for a proper hone one day, I just don't have the time to be straight shaving prior to work. Will have to one day though!! Thank you

I agree with you, it is an excellent razor. I actually used it months ago and while I did achieve great shaves, I didn't achieve BBS around the lips. I have sold it and now that I have tampered down from the "aggressive" razors (R41, H2, Fatip, V3A, dialed up Futur, etc), I acquired another and am planning on shaving with it tomorrow. I also ordered the X3 (heard it shaves similar to 102 but smaller head), Weber and Timeless scalloped baseplate version. Hope one of these can tame my hair growth.

This is exactly why I started shaving in the evenings - triple benefit:
1. Have some quiet me-time
2. Learn a new way of shaving
3. Make my SWMBO happy

I don't typically shave ATG, so take my comments with a grain of salt.

When I've tried shaving ATG with my more aggressive razors, I get a lot of skipping and tugging as well. I do think it's the flexibility of the blade due to the higher blade exposure.
