head shavers...

I'm new to the head shaving scene. I just had a barber shave my head clean with a straight razor on Tuesday afternoon. I like the look and will probably continue to shave it every 2-3 days.

I had a few questions...

do you shave your head while in the shower? do you use shaving soap/cream or any type of gel or coconut oil (I read this is fairly popular to use for shaving the head)? what type of razor do you use? I don't know if I'm comfortable using a DE to shave my head yet so I was probably going to start with my gillette guard or a bic sensitive disposable. if you do a day or two between shaving your head, do you apply a lotion and/or aftershave balm or splash on your head?

I have shaved my head every day since November 2015. Sometimes twice in a day on weekends. The first week of shaving my head I used cartridges and canned gel with horrible results. perfectly smooth and clean, but major irritation and horrible ingrown hairs. After the first week I discovered DE razors...

I currently switch between DE, SE, shavette, and traditional straights. My favorite to use is the traditional straight, just for the enjoyment of the experience. I use DE and SE when I am short on time, patience, or energy, or if I have a "special meeting" of some kind, because I get closer results from them.

I don;t use any oil. I use traditional brush and soap, and I apply aftershave splashes primarily, with an occasional balm if I am feeling a little dry or a touch of irritation.

I basically shave my head the same way you guys all shave your faces...every day, and with as much fanfare as possible

Good luck and welcome to the club. They say if you make it 30 days shaving every night, you'll never go back. I find it to be true. I have no interest in growing my hair, even though realistically my pattern baldness is nowhere near the "need to shave" stage...I shave my head because I love shaving and I love my beard...

I bounce between a Gillette Guard and a very mild DE (I use a RazoRock Babysmooth usually). The DE does a much quicker job than the Guard, but for me the Guard is much easier on short growth (less than 2 days). Anything more, and the DE works much better. I shave in the shower usually, but don't tend to use any pre-shave. Just lather with soap and brush.
I'm still getting the hang of it after about 3 or 4 months, I don't tend to get weepers around the ears anymore which is a plus. Also, my time has been cut down considerably. The first several times of headshaving in the shower It took me a good 45+ mins. I felt bad wasting so much water. I'm still not very quick but I can finish within 20 minutes or so.

I don't currently shave my head.

I have been thinking about getting back to it. I used a DE razor. Different one than my face just so I didn't cash out the blade and forget to change it.

I switched to clippers though because I had too many bumps and ingrown hairs. Now I just whizz my head with clippers once or twice a week.

It's a different sensation for a while at first. The wind, the pillows, everything feels hyper strange. Use a good sunscreen and get a hat you like. A sunburn on the head is not fun!

Andrew, I started with hair clippers, initially, then moved to a rotary razor and progressed to DEs around 2-3 years ago.
I would suggest a mild DE razor or even one of your injector razors as you are comfortable with them, I believe.

I use a good soap and, mainly, a synthetic brush (they dry very quickly). I head-lather and do 2 passes with touch-ups.
I shave my head every night and use unrefined shea butter as a balm, afterwards.

It is great to be able to shave twice a day; morning face shave and evening head shave.

I shave my head every day. Although it was a learning experience getting to a comfortable BBS shave, even at the start I had no problem at all getting a DFS using my favorite DE/SE/Injectors. I use either my DIY oils or the same soaps and creams I use for the beard.

FWIW I did not like AC blade razors for my head shave , owned the Hawk, General, and Jefe , but sold them all.

Another every day head shaver, most used is the Feather Artist Club razor but also straights, DE, SE. I find it actually easier to shave the head then the face, no skin stretching needed (for now at least)

my first head shave is in the books. I shaved in the shower after I washed my face and head with my standard bar of soap from stirling. once my head was washed, I used a brand new gillette guard and some cremo original shaving cream that is brushless. the shave wasn't bad, but I do have a fair bit or irritation on the upper sides of my head and the upper back portion of my head. I kind of did 2 passes: front to back & back to front, and mostly went by feel.

I have 2 mirrors in my shower, but they're kind of small and it was rather hard to use them against each other to shave the back of my head. these are the two mirrors I have:

I think for my next head shave (I'll probably give my skin 2 days to heal up), I'll shave in front of my large mirror before showering, using my cold water methods. I'll probably stick with my gillette guard and the cremo shaving cream for a few more tries to see if it's working out or not..

if you don't mind sharing, what's your DIY oils consist of?

It's an ever changing brew but always some blend of glycerine plus meadowfoam, grapeseed , avocado, and argan oils.
