Hallows

I used B&M Hallows for the first time in awhile. It could be as much as a year. The scent is different than I remember. I'm wondering if it has changed with age. It's almost pure oak moss, I think, which is absolutely fantastic. I liked the scent a year ago, but today I loved it.

I think my tub is about two years old. Has anyone else had Hallows or any soap scent develop over time?

haven't used it in a while, so it's going right to the front of the rotation....

I've found with most of my soaps (especially my B&Ms) that after a period of not using them the scent tends to change a bit. Giving them a few lathers and getting past the top layer tends to help smooth out the scent again to get them back to normal.

That means you got one of the original 19. Wow. Honestly, I don't even have any soap left from the original production run, so it's entirely possible that some of the fragrance compounds have burned away over the course of age. However, the really heavy stuff like the vetiver and the cocoa absolute and the labdanum are pretty unlikely to have gone anywhere; they're too dense and their evaporation points are too high for them to have disappeared. As someone else said, it's likely that an outer layer has sort of coalesced around the core of the soap. Once you break through it, it should smell like it originally did again (which, considering that you like this scent even better, may not necessarily be a good thing).

It's also possible that, in the course of age, it has simply blended together into one unified scent as the soap has continued to cure. As I said, I don't have any Hallows old enough to say.

Thanks for chiming in, Will. Maybe I wasn't in the original 19 because mine is in a plastic tub, not a tin. It's possible that I transferred it from tin to plastic when you switched containers, as I did that with some of your other soaps. I'm not sure.

Of course, there's always the chance that it's user error and I am incorrectly remembering the scent. That's entirely possible.

I'm into fragrances too, and I've noticed that my opinions and impressions of certain fragrances change over time. I'll sometimes notice a note in a fragrance that I didn't find in an initial wearing, and then I wonder how I missed it.

I FINALLY got my tub of Hallows in the mail yesterday after two weeks lost in the wild. I blame Canada Post because that tub was mis-routed all over Quebec and Ontario before it was delivered properly. Well, it was certainly worth the wait. Fantastic scent. Am I crazy, or are there some subtle similarities to the fougere aromatique?
