I get asked this question often. I also see on the forum that GD's business model is just odd! Grooming Dept is a great deal smaller than nearly any other artisan of high regard; I operate the business out of a one-bedroom space. I don't have shelf space to make large batches that stick around. I don't have the cash to tie in inventory that might or might not sell.
Some of my scents are 70+ ingredients. A scent takes 3-6 months to mature. Once a batch is made, it is impossible to remake the scent on the fly if a soap is popular enough to warrant a remake. Fragrance ingredients are the most expensive part of making a soap. Some scent ingredients I buy are often acquired for one soap release. Purchasing fragrance ingredients in small quantities is costly.
This is the reality of being a full-time small artisan shop.
