I know I've mentioned podcasts before but I thought I'd start a thread where members can post about their favourite podcasts or their not favourite and reasons why in either case.  I think this could be a great service to members because there really is a lot of podcasts out there and finding a really good one is serendipitous.

So my favourite podcast has to be The Art of Manliness.  I started looking at the AoM website ( https://www.artofmanliness.com) a number of years back when my kids were much younger and I was looking for information on raising young boys and girls.  (as a side not I highly recommend books by Michael Gurian The Wonder of Boys and The Wonder of Girls plus others) I found a lot of good articles not just on raising kids but on how to be a better man, husband and father.  Great tips for young guys starting out in the work world and just all kinds of things that people, not just men should know or might be interested in.  Much of this kind of information traditionally was handed down from father (or Grandfather) to son/grandson but as we all know, we don't live in an ideal world and this information is often not passed along for one reason or another. The AoM site even has a wealth of information on wet shaving https://www.artofmanliness.com/?s=shaving. When Brett McKay, the principal of A0M started doing a podcast several years ago I tuned in - his approach is generally to interview the author of a book that touches on manliness or in some way of interest to men although again I'd say that women might find a lot of the material interesting as well.  I have gone on to read many of the books that have been featured in the podcasts and I've never been disappointed.  The podcasts are long enough that they can get into detail but not multi-hour extravaganzas (I'm talking to you Dan Carlin) and I listen to them usually while driving.

Other podcasts worthy of honourable mention are:

Hardcore History with Dan Carlin - these are excellent and often consist of 3-5 episodes with each episode being 3-4 hours long.  A lot of his content was migrated a few years ago behind a pay wall but there is still some excellent free content.  I think that even if you pay for the content its great value.

Mobituarieshttps://www.mobituaries.com Mo Rocca hosts this and he discusses notable dead people or things (The Station Wagon - Death of a Leviathan) in a very interesting and engaging way.

The Way I Heard It - Mike Rowe hosts these 10-15 minute long stories in a mini-mystery format.  He doesn't reveal who the subject is until the last minute.  They're fun and interesting.

Lather Talk - this is an excellent podcast on all things shaving hosted by DFS members Jon and Gerard and they feature interviews with artisans and shaving folks and they aren't afraid to get into the controversial issues int the wet shaving world.  Really good

Im going to stop there but I want to invite members to post their favourite podcasts along with reasons why you like them.  What makes them a good podcast?

Thanks

Mark

The majority of the episodes are either "Adventures of the Red Panda" (a sort of Batman/Green Hornet crime-fighting vigilante set in pre-WWII Toronto) or "Black Jack Justice" (a hardboiled detective series, post-WWII, in an un-named large city).
Both are tributes to Old-Time Radio drama, with much humour that does not make fun of the genres. Many loveable recurring characters, much witty banter.
Until the past year or so, they were both in the style of fully-produced radio dramas with multiple actors and sound effects, but recently he's made them more like audio books. If you get that far, you can still "hear" the original voices.
I've kept copies of all episodes since the beginning and have listened to them at least three times over by now.

Skip the first 6 "Original Universe" episodes, because they have a completely different vibe to them, and are, IMO, inferior. Don't go back to them until after you've heard at least a dozen of the other episodes. They are of interest only for historical purposes for the diehard fans.

Those sound interesting John Rose   I think I’ll give them a listen. I couldn’t find a separate listing for the black hat justice one but it seems to appear under the same listing as red panda. They sound like fun. I’m a fan of that genre of literature.  Thanks for the suggestions  Happy2

They do.
They originally had 6 episodes of RP followed by 6 episodes of BJJ, then 6 RP... etc.
Then for a while they alternated with one of each, and sometimes mini-series of unrelated stories in the summer hiatus.

Great recommendations Marko, I'll have to check out a few of those as I love listening to podcasts or audiobooks on my daily commute. Thank you for sharing.

I particularly like Trixie Dixon's snappy rejoinders. (Also, beware of "The Mousetrap" Big Grin )
See what I mean about the humour that doesn't make it a parody of the genre?

But if you do like a parody now and then - You can't do better than Firesign Theatre's "Further Adventures of Nick Danger - Third Eye" (from a 1969 album)

Use stereo headphones for the best listening experience, since they play with the left-right panning and such.

re: Peter Gunn on Prime - I didn't know about that. Thanks for the heads up. It's the original TV series, too.

I’ll check that out too. I really enjoyed Trixie Dixon’s description of how she wanted to shoot John Michael Mulligan O’Day. Hilarious.

That looks interesting. I’ll listen to an episode today  Happy2

It’s funny, I have to let go of my neurotic obsession with listening/watching/reading series in order from the start when they’re well along when I discover them. I find that’s usually ok with most podcasts because episodes are usually  designed to stand alone.

Thanks
