It might be a Christmastime special.  Crabtree & Evelyn used to do this with annual shaving scuttle releases in the 1980s.  Here are two such examples:

The Gillette Heritage is likely aimed at both enthusiasts and the Christmas gift market.  Christmas gifts are also a huge part of Art of Shaving's sales.  Go by one of their stores after Thanksgiving and you will see lots of women buying gift sets for their beaus.  The DE89 / R89 head works well for newbies and experienced wetshavers alike, and so is a good choice.

Gillette is probably testing the waters with the Heritage razor, thus the limited distribution and release.  If it proves popular enough, they could well make it a year around item or release similar limited edition items each Christmas.  If anyone likes the razor, it would be a good idea to encourage Gillette by sending them a complimentary email.

It's a "bait & switch" to get traffic into their (P&G) AOS stores IMO and nothing more as I am sure these will conveniently be available come Xmas time shopping at said location.

Bait & switch? To which razor would they switch customers? I doubt that someone looking for a safety razor would be interested in a much more expensive cartridge razor. AoS used to show what looked like a vintage razor in their storefront banners, but they stopped doing that a long time ago. It looks like the Heritage is Amazon-only for now. Gillette appears to have greatly underestimated the demand, as the razors quickly sold out on pre-order.

If Gillette uses the Heritage to get people into the Art of Shaving stores, there's certainly no harm in that. The AoS chain exposes more people to traditional shaving in a week that the forums do in a year. A lot of cartridge and canned gel users had their eyes opened to new possibilities via their Christmas gifts.

Today, the Amazon website is listing the Heritage razor with a new shipping date of November 17th (moved from November 5th). It "magically" is available for purchase once again! I suspect that no one will receive this razor until after November 17th. My new delivery date is November 20th. If you were on the fence, I suggest ordering it sooner than later, since the product description still lists LIMITED AVAILABILITY. I believe that after this product sells out, that will be the end of it. Gillette is playing a typical "corporate game" without a marketing or logistical plan for this product. I do not believe they are "testing the waters" for a "long term" DE product in our market. Neither Amazon or Gillette has answered any questions I have emailed them about this product release. Enjoy this "Gillette" product while it is viewable on a website and available for purchase.

I’ve managed to keep my money in my pocket this far, and I don’t think a little more corporate ping-pong will change that. Now if other folks want to buy it, I think that’s great. What will be will be, and time will tell us all we need to know.
