Gillette Perma Sharp Super

I noticed these packages looking different. The blades are different because the ones that just says Perma Sharp are laser etched and difficult to see the riding unless you turn it in the light...

I bought a tuck on my latest Maggard order which just arrived yesterday and mine are the newest laser etched version. Used one today in a razor I haven't used in nigh onto a year:  PAA Prismatic and had a superb shave. Of course, as I have stated repeatedly that after a fella gets his technique & prep down in concert with any good soap/cream all modern Gillette blades such as this shave very, very similar, i.e., excellent, with any minute differences usually being purely subjective.  

When you state that all modern Gillette blades are similarly excellent, I disagree with you based on my personal experience. Depending upon your beard and skin type and the blades you have evaluated, you may have that experience with the Gillette blades you have used.  However, with my coarse beard and sensitive skin, I notice a significant difference in Gillette blades. However, I realize that I am not a typical shaver in that regard.

Astra SP blades are not quite sharp enough to give me a close, comfortable  shave no matter which razor I use them in. Lest you say that I must have gotten counterfeit blades, I have tried SP blades from multiple sources; all provided similar, unsatisfactory results. I know that many people consider them to be plenty sharp, but they are not quite sharp enough for my beard. I could use them if I did not have anything better. I find the the Rubie Plus blades are not sharp enough, either.

I love Astra Superior Stainless blades, which I find to be both sharp and smooth.

Gillette 7 0' Clock Sharpedge Yellow blades are very smooth and are slightly sharper than the Astra SP blades, They give me a nice shave in an aggressive razor like the Muhle R41. However, they are not sharp enough to work well for me in milder razors.

I find Gillette PermaSharp Super, Gillette Nacet and Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Platinum Black blades to be very sharp, even sharper than that Astra SS blades. I find them to be similar to Feather blades in sharpness, although perhaps not on the first shave.. For me, these Gillette blades work quite well in mild-to-moderately aggressive razors, but they would be to sharp to use in my Muhle R41; the face feel would be too harsh.

Blades like Gillette Platinum, Gillette Silver Blue, Gillette Polsilver, 7 O'Clock Russian Greens, and Gillette branded Wilkinson Sword blades work fine for me in moderately-aggressive razors, but I prefer sharper blades like those listed above. I find these blades to be similar in sharpness to Rapira Platinum Lux and Voskhod. However, I can see why these blades are quite popular for many shavers whose beards are less coarse than mine.

As I have stated before, the sharpness is not a factor. An educated guess based on reading their patents leads me to believe that all their blades are ground to the same sharpness. After all, it would not be economically smart to stop the line and install different grinders for every run. The differences are in the hone angles of the edges and to what degree the edges are hardened via platinum, chromium and whatever else they are sputtering on.

Gillette manufactures razor blades in Russia, India and China, and perhaps other places. I suspect that the plant in Russia has multiple production lines since they produce so many different types of blades, although I do not know for sure. Remember also that some of their brands like Astra, Polsilver, and 7 O'Clock were purchased from their previous companies. Gillette may have acquired some equipment as well.

Thus, blades might be ground differently. However, we do know that there are differences in the coatings of the blades, both in type and likely in thickness. The coatings will affect the sharpness and smoothness of the blades as well.

Interesting. I've bought 100 packs from Amazon twice over the past couple of years, as these are my favorite blade, and I don't think either had the Gillette branding.

I got a 100 package of them, and the look like the ones on the left. I used to prefer feathers, but this had become my number 1 choice at this moment.

Perma Sharps are excellent. I didn't realize they were Gillette owned.

I'm there with you on my top two blades except feather first for me and these Gillette Perma Sharp Super and the #2 spot. Both are nice cutters, to me.
