Gillette New Long Comb

I currently have 23 razors in my rotation.  I love the variety of the types of razors I have, and knowing a bit about each.  The downside is that I only get to use any specific razor once every 3-4 weeks [if I use them in strict sequence]. But after awhile I think I a favorite has emerged.  It's a re-plated Gillette New Long Comb head and a UFO Goliath handle.  It provides the most efficient, smooth and effortless shave of all my razors.  I am a DFS guy [in shaving also] but I come close to a BBS w/o extra effort. I guess I'm suggesting that everyone, yes everyone, obtain and try this razor.

Procedure:

1] Go to Ebay and buy a vintage New Long Comb.
2] If gnarly, even when cleaned up, have it re-plated.  Shiny nickel will do if rhodium is too expensive; mine is nickel.
3] If the purchased razor head is in good condition, omit Step 2.
4] Purchase a new handle, preferably one on the hefty side.  The handle that normally comes with the New Long Comb is a hollow, lightweight example of subpar handle-making.
5] Attach said handle to said New Long Comb head, properly prep your beard and have a great time!

Please, not everyone Ted, cause I'm looking for one myself! Having returned to wet shaving only recently, I currently have only 4 DE razors, but of the 4, my NEW SC thin handle replated in rhodium by ATT is my favorite. I want to try the LC and will either pick one up and have it replated unless it's mint, or wait for ATT to have one like the SC that I already bought from him.

Since the user reports on the comparative shaving differences in the two are so mixed, I'm going to have to see for myself. My stable will have a high end stainless steel razor in it, someday, but I haven't yet decided which it will be. No matter what I choose, I rather doubt that it will shave any better than the NEW, either SC or LC.

The NEW is a razor every wet-shaver must have!

I have one, but I am not going to replate it, I like it as it is.

I have both the long and short comb versions. The short comb is in very nice condition. To be kind, the long comb is in user grade condition. I have toyed with the idea of getting it replated but it shaves so competently as is that I love it even if it isn't a beauty contender.

Just got a LC new, and after using it some had the same thought. Only concern I had was would modern handles thread onto it? I thought modern razors were metric, and a New was standard

Generally no issues. M5 x 0.8 is almost always interchangeable with them.

There are at least three different handles that came with News and really either the thin or common bar should not be referred to as subpar.

They actually are a very nice handle for a mass, general merchandise razor, that can easily be weighted however you want.

Well said Teddyboy. The NEW is the standard. You hear equal amount of comments about it being perfect, too mild and too aggressive. This tells me that it is right in the middle and is a great razor to figure out what type of razor your like. For me, the NEW is perfect. And I agree with a heftier handle. I use a nickel plated brass 14mm x 100mm handle.

where's the photos of your razor?  

The man has a point...

I have both a short & long comb NEW and to be frank I don't like either. I could never shave with either around my mouth or chin w/o getting nicked or weepers. I should sell them to be franker.
