Hello all Gibbs owners, I have a question for you.
I love my Gibbs although I don't use it that often as I shy away from making a DE blade fit.
I did it though as I wanted to re-acquaint myself with the glorious shaving characteristics of the Gibbs.
Loaded with a feather, it gave me a fantastic BBs, a bit smoother than the REX I have to admit.
After the shave, I took it apart to clean it and I saw the spring in mine is black in color. Is this normal or is it a replacement.
I've already ordered a replacement so this is not a big issue, but I'd like to know if the original spring is in black, probably anodized.

I changed my spring also, it was rusty from all the years being inside.... Works like a charm and I'm guessing we are speaking of the same spring people are getting from ebay seller from China.

In case you are modifying you blades with punch tool you should try scissors, its fast and easy

Yes, the new spring is from China, BTW the first one I ordered was never delivered and the vendor is sending me a replacement.
The question is though, is the original spring black?

Can you post the info on the spring so that I can find one if needed?

I saw a picture of an original spring next to the replacement Chinese spring, and it was black also.

I doubt the original spring would of been coated black, an unnecessary thing to do for a SS part. Mine was rusted only and I saw no black coating on it

So mine is not original. Here is the link to the replacement.

The first one I ordered got lost in the mail, so they are sending a replacement free of charge. I haven't used it, but others who have, say it's just about the same tension as the original.

Thanks Kypros.
I don't have a Gibbs #17, but I have a Personna Precision Micromatic Adjustable - it is the Personna-version that accepts normal DE blades.

It is very good to know where can I find a substitution spring! Smile

I think the Gibbs is among the greatest DE razors ever built. It's incredibly smooth while being adjustable and everyone who has it, has nothing but praise for it. I bought mine more than a year ago while prices were still reasonable.

yup that's one I bought, works like a charm. Tension is little bit stronger that the original but lets not forget the old one took a lot of usage plus it was rusted, so to me the ebay one should be the same as the new one from Gibbs
