This was actually last night's shave, and this is the first chance I have had to write it up.
- Omega Boar (#20102)
- DERBY
- RazoRock SS Lupo 95, Astra SS
- Ghost Town Barber AS
- Cremo Spice and Black Vanilla EDT
DERBY is a hard soap. I scraped about 2 1/2 grams off the puck and bowl lathered with hot distilled water. I added the water bit by bit, although with hindsight, blooming might have been better. At any rate, scraping hard soap into a bowl and lathering - with or without blooming - is not my favorite way to build lather
Well I was surprised. I got gobs of good looking lather after not too much time. Most importantly, it felt right on the face - thick enough and very slick. It had shine, and when I dipped the razor in water, the lather came right to the top, floated, and decomposed slowly. BTW, I wasn't surprised at the quantity. IMO 2 1/2 grams figured to be on the high side, and after reading the adventures of Messrs. LUCKY 1 and 2, I decided too much was good, and just enough was likely to be too little. On the down side, the lather broke down toward the quicker side, which IME has generally meant under hydrated lather. But it still went on thick and slick, and I was shaving away like gangbusters - I ended with a bloodless BBS - so I continued. I added water after the finish as a test: No improvement. Looking back, I don't think the lather was under hydrated after all (or over hydrated). You just need to load and lather generously with this stuff, and either shave fast or repaint.
Saving the worst for last brings me to the scent. Ken and Dave have covered that well, and I will only add that my distaste for the scent may be more visceral. As much as the lather performed well, I really wanted to get the stuff off my face and be done with it. BTW the lather is drying too, but to me, that's not a big deal. You take some of the money you saved, buy a bottle of after care, and you're good to go again. In my book, the real show stopper is the scent.
Anyway, thanks to Ken' s leadership ( ) and Dave's kindness ( ), I am now the third member of this exclusive club:
