First Legit DFS with a straight!

So...I got home from work last night, and had a nice treat in the mailbox...a vintage Torrey 5/8 Square Point Full Hollow, with a pretty nice edge on it, in really decent condition. I spent about 15 minutes with it on the ceramic stone to polish up the edge a little bit, then took it through a tour of the ChromOx strop then the leather. Whipped that edge into really nice shape!

Anyhow...I got up this morning, gave her about 40-50 laps on the hard leather strop, and went at it. 3 passes, WTG/XTG and the final pass was a combination of GTX on the sides and back of the head, and ATG on the top of the head.

For the first time since I started using a straight, I did not need to do any cleanups with a DE to get to DFS. I could do some touchup with the DE and get to BBS, but frankly, I am really VERY happy with a DFS in 3 passes using only the straight.

I am on my way!

I never thought I would either. I always wanted to use a straight, but I was always scared. I'm really starting to get the hang of it...

Both!

Actually, I can feel a difference in each of the razors I use. Much like the DEs, I can choose a razor based on stubble growth and desired results...

The Torrey is exceptionally smooth, but not the closest shaver. This may be able to be improved when the Naniwa stones get here. Maybe not. It shaves "close enough" to give me DFS in 3 passes, and that's good enough for me, so either way, it's a true winner and currently sits as my "favorite".

The Gold Dollar 300 is a very close shaver, but is not as smooth as the Torrey or the Geneva. I do not think this will change with the stones, as the edge is very fine, and I don't think they will help improve the smoothness at all. I do, however, have a balsa strop en route with ChrOx and IrOx powders that *might* help with that. We shall see...

The Geneva is very smooth and also very close...a good combination of the 2, but I think the sharpness can be improved when my Naniwa stones get here. This is the one I put my own edge on, and my current set of stones are really seriously lacking in their abilities to provide an optimal shaving edge. When the Naniwa stones arrive, it will have a visit with the 10k stone, followed by the balsa strop and abrasives, which should improve closeness, and smoothness. This could become the best razor in my collection by the end of next week...

I have a Taylor Eye Witness that needs more work, so it's in reserve, waiting for my Naniwa Super Stones and balsa strop to arrive. It has not had a proper shave test yet, as I have not been able to get it where it needs to go with the limited capabilities of my current stones.

And I just odered a "sight unseen" vintage razor from WhippedDog.com No idea where this might fit into my rotation, so we shall see...

It is a very exciting and satisfying journey I am on right now...
