A month or so ago I purchased a beautiful example of a SC NEW. My anticipation ran high prior to my first shave as this was the oldest razor I have purchased and was by far in the best condition. I could not wait to utilize this 80 year old tool the way it was meant to be used.
To my dismay my first few shaves with the razor were terrible. So much so that I put the razor on the BST hoping to trade it for something that I knew would work for me. I could feel the edges of the combs and the blade on my face. The shaves were rough and not close. I could not believe what was happening. How could this be possible?
This past week I had an amazing experience with a particular blade that I tried. It performed pretty poorly in one razor then was an absolute dream in another. Then, in the back of my mind, I just knew my solution to the SC NEW was Blade related. This morning I put an Astra SP in the razor and had a Spectacular! Shave. I used a little more shallow blade angle than before and the Astra blade just made this razor a total joy to use. Super efficient like the LC I love and just smooth as silk.
I'm so thankful no one wanted to trade for it or that someone didn't make an offer. I probably would have taken next to nothing for it. I disliked it that much. Now, I'll never get rid of it.
Thanks for reading.

That's great to hear. I love both my long comb and short comb Gillette NEW razors. As with a lot of razors, just a bit of tweaking can make all the difference. Enjoy that little beauty. Happy2

Glad you came around to it. The NEW SC is one of my favorite razors. Close, smooth shaves. It never lets me down.
David : DE shaving since Nov 2014. Nowadays giving in to the single-edge siren call.

Great testimony to how much of a difference a blade can make. Glad that you found a winning combo- enjoy bgremill .

I have had the same experience. Certain blades just don't perform well with certain razors. So glad that you got it figured out. That is one of my favorites too.

I like the LC New, but haven't used it for a while. Blades can definitely make the razor. I was traveling with a Red Tip and couldn't get a decent shave... I tried Feather, Astra, Gillettes... then I out of frustration I tried a Dorco 300 that I bought in Thailand and voila, a great shave.
Enjoy your New.

Interesting you say that. I have never had a great shave with my Red Tip. I can get consistent comfortable DFS but never can get it shave super close. Maybe I'll keep it and keep trying blades.

I passed mine on to a friend who was born the same year as the razor. Au revoir!

If anyone knows where I can pick up a Gillette NEW hook me up with a link. I've been looking (not very hard I'll admit) for a year or so.
