Feather blade

Hi all, two months into my DE shaving experiment. I started with a sample razor pack and was told DONT use the Feather until you have some time with a DE.

So I used the four others until three days ago. I put the Feather in my Rockwell 6s and was completely disappointed in the result. I figured I was just spooked with all the "Be careful" talk.

The second shave was just as disappointing even though I was more comfortable. 

The third shave with a new blade was no better. 

During my sampling the Gillette Sword gave a tremendous shave over and over.

So the question is; does a certain razor,facial hair just dictate which blade is best for me?

It's a myth as ALL razor blades are sharp and as they are aligned in a razor at a fixed distance the blade does not rear and "bite" you.  

What plate # did you use? Of course it’s all subjective and your experience is just that. My experience is that the Rockwell 6s and Feather blade are an excellent combination. Usually on plate 3 or 4. You will find, probably, that you enjoy certain razor and blade combinations more than others so all I’d tell you is to use your own experience to decide what works best for you. I’ve said this before but if you check out The One thread under blades you’ll see that there aren’t any blades universally loved or hated. Well, maybe hated

I've tried the feather  plate 2 and 3 which is where the Sword gives a near perfect shave.

I have been at this DE traditional shaving for about 4 years, and if I have learned one thing it is to not get rid of any razor or blade. Over time the razors and blades that I didn’t like for what ever reason all of a sudden they work pretty good. Techniques change and I now find very few of the items I didn’t like I still don’t like. For me the idea that a particular blade can work great in one razor and lousy in another just doesn’t happen. Maybe a little difference here and there but very little at best.

Yup.
When I first got my Henson AL13 Mild I thought "Woo-hoo! I can use a Feather in this!"
Then I tried the same Feather in an Edwin Jagger DE87. No problem.
Eventually I got used to using it in any razor, with the exception of maybe one or two that I am still cautious about using any blade in.

Even so, I got the impression (from somewhere) that Feather blades use a slightly thinner steel than most blades, so conceivably they could be more prone to chatter in razors with a lot of blade exposure.

I used Feather for a few years with smooth, but often irritated results. Then late last year I bought a sampler with a variety of other blades. Switched (only the blade in my setup) to Gillette 7 O'Clock Yellow, and have had a much better experience. I think it is experimenting with you, your razor, your blade, and probably a mixture of technique, to determine what works best for you.

Admittedly, I have not tried several of the other blades yet...so for now my tests will go on!

I have a very tough beard, so I thought Feather blades would be a great option for me. After all, Feather blades are known to the the very sharpest blades out of the wrapper. Unfortunately, I also have very sensitive skin. Although the edges of Feather blades are quite sharp, they are also quite fragile. Thus, the quality of the edge deteriorates rapidly. I was able to get a great first shave and a nice second shave. By the third shave however, the edge started feeling harsh on my face and I had to replace the blade before continuing. I have seen reports from other shavers that they had similar experiences.

If your beard is not as coarse as mine, then the Feather blades should last a while longer. However, if your beard is not as coarse, you do not need a blade as sharp as Feather. For my beard and skin, I really like BIC Chrome Platinum blades and Gillette Nacets. They do not start out quite as sharp as Feathers, but they get sharper with use and do not become harsh quite as quickly.

Truly a ymmv issue. Sample packs are the way until you find a blade for you
