I wouldn't change a thing but I guess some may be interested. If you change the base plate it is not longer an AS-D2. At that point it is a Feather handle with a top plate not much different from others, but it is not going to perform anything like it was designed.

I have a very thick and fast growing full beard, and the Feather cuts right through it no problem. Mild is a good thing in my case, but I realize some people want more aggression. Personally I would not recommend the AS-D2 to anyone looking for an aggressive razor.

The AS-D2 is one of my favourite razors and not surprisingly it seems to have an affinity for Feather blades. People say its a mild razor and I'm not sure I agree with that assessment. It depends on what you mean by your terminology. I think it is a comfortable and efficient razor in that it will give me a BBS shave with no drama. For those who like to live on the razor's edge, they might want a more bladey razor.

I call it a mild and efficient razor where mild means smooth and forgiving on the skin, or not harsh. I reserve the word aggressive for razors that are extremely efficient but to the point that you have to be very careful, such as the R41. I use the word efficient to describe the AS-D2 because it cuts the hair off in an efficient manner.

I agree with Hobbyist in his interpretation.

One shave in - the comfort is beyond my expectations. This is the Cadillac of razors.

The ASD2 provides me with a better shave than my Wolfman. I wish more people would try it. Can anyone compare the ASD2 to the Blackbird?

Blackbird is significantly more efficient with wider effective angle.

The as-d2 mild reputation comes from the very narrow effective angle.

Believe it or not there was a time when the AS-D2 was one of the most popular razors out, and commanded a price of $200. Later after the newness wore off I suppose, it became less popular. That's when I bought, after the price dropped.
