It's the black tea scent in it that gives it that little something extra and pushed it into the "buy" category for me. It's so nice to be able to smell a soap or aftershave before purchasing it...

....and so begins the slow, gentle seduction. First its Anne Bonny then maybe Barrister & Mann or Mystic Waters and before you know it you'll be powerless in the grasp of the demon (bay) rum! You'll be frequenting sleazy waterfront taverns looking for that next lash of raunchy, spicy bay rum until one day you look in the mirror and don't even recognize yourself so powerful the effect of the Captain's Choice Cat O'Nine Tails that you apply two, sometimes three times a day just for that soul quenching burn that nothing else can provide. Feel the burn Smile

You are too funny Marko! The Anne Bonny is on deck for tomorrow's shave so we'll see if the "slow, gentle seduction" begins. LOL

Mike's is a decent bay rum soap. You should be happy with it.

I forgot to include St. John's Bay Rum aftershave and balm as among the superior bay rum products. Happy2

I hope so. I haven't used any of Mike's products in ages, but at the time when I was trying them, I didn't have nearly enough experience lathering harder soaps before I wrote them off for a while.

Mike's Bay Rum is one of my favorite Bay Rum scents. B&M Bay Rum is very good too. I liked the Krampert's scent, but my skin got irritated from that one as soon as I started to face lather.

Mike's Natural Soaps was the first artisan soap that I tried. I have quite a bit of it now. It just clicked for me when I first tried lathering and that was with very hard well water. Mike's soaps will take a great deal of water and I think that's the key to getting a nice slick creamy lather from it. Now that you have more experience lathering harder soaps, andrewjs18, I suspect you won't have any trouble at all. I think the only knock I ever had with Mike's was the waiting to get the soap or catching the scent you want in stock.

This! Derby City is really inspired by Bay Rum which is fine by me as I'm not a fan of traditional Bay Rum scents.

Just curious... Does the splash do it also?

I'm pretty sure I know what caused it if you answer what I think you will.

Thanks for the reply no matter what you write. Smile

FWIW, I get a tingle also, but just a tingle and it passes quite rapidly, but we're all built differently and (here it comes) YMMV.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure if the splash has the same effect. I only bought the Bay Rum Acadian Spice shaving soap. This was about a year ago and I just recently have been getting into aftershaves, especially splashes. The sensation was more of an intense burning instead of a tingle. I have experienced this with a few other shaving soaps, so I just assumed it was due to some fragrance that my skin is sensitive to. I get the same reaction from Mystic Water Vanilla Sandalwood and La Saponeria Artigiana Almond Shaving Soaps. Other scents from Mystic Water seem to create no problem.

I also battle rosacea, so that could cause some sensitivity for my skin also. Maybe I'm just "one of those people" who can't just use whatever he wants because it smells good, but doesn't agree with my skin. But, I keep trying stuff like it's going out of style!

Thanks Rob, I did check with Soap Smooth who makes the soap to my spec's. Nothing has changed on their end, so I'm going to assume it's "just" a sensitivity. That doesn't diminish what you felt though. Natural materials can be very powerful and not everyone reacts predictably to them. I'm sorry for the reaction that it had with your body. It won't make you feel any better about it, but most folks have no reaction at all.

I do appreciate the feedback so that I can stay on top of things.
