I don't use aftershave anymore but have you ever tried Barbedeaux Andrew.  It's unscented and heavy smell of Alcohol initially but it might fit the bill as a late night head shaver.  It has quite a few positive reviews on one etailer site I use.

You can't go wrong with one of Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements' splashes - I have several of them and they are in my rotation.  PAA has the largest selection of bay rum and bay rum variants of any artisan and they do not all smell the same.  They are bracing and manly.   Happy2  I don't think they're just alcohol, water and fragrance either because they leave a nice face feel that isn't drying at all without being greasy int any way.  Like em.

Splash of vodka with coke does it for me, but while shaving Speick is probably safer.

I like many of the various scents of splash aftershaves. But for me there is a fine balance that one needs to display to be termed great, a prominent but not overwhelming fragrance, enough alcohol for a gentle warm burn but not too much, enough glycerin or aloe or other lubricant but not too much, a soothing drydown, etc. I think that the one which meets that standard the best is Aramis Tuscany.
