UPDATE:

I wanted to share this as this wasn’t mentioned in the last post as I thought it should be a separate post and since Matt Nero mentioned Violeta I thought I’d give folks a progress report.

So I have everything I need to make the Violeta F Base Shave soap and a couple of custom Violet Tallow Shave Cremes that a couple of people requested. Here’s where I’m at with this project. I’m going to make a small batch and I’ll explain why in the below paragraphs.

As normal I get a lot of messages from my existing customers, new customers and potential new customers who in our conversations have brought up the Violeta project. Most that ask are messaging me about other products, ingredients and their orders but in the conversation many times they will also ask.. so I see your working on another new product like Ravello, Rosa for example and ask questions like how’s the scent or what base will it be in, when’s it coming out etc. etc.  So from these conversations I’ve learned that most people don’t know what real Violet smells like or their preconception of it is what they’ve smelled at Bath and Body Works or some Violet bath soap who’s target market is women where the scent is a very sweet soft floral which is so far away from what real Violet Leaf smells like. An then when I explain hat it’s nothing like that it’s a very strong earthy green, grassy with a bit of a  woody note to it. Violet Flower has a fresh Citrusy green opening with a soft powdery slightly sweet woody note. It is so different from the leaf and is more of a top note. It’s a wonderful but fleeting olfactory experience and it would not hold up well on its own in a Shave Soap and would not have good longevity if it were alone in a cologne or perfume without the help of its sibling the Violet Leaf which is very powerful. BTW my handmade Violet infusion is smelling great but man is it green so it will be interesting to see what effect it has on the final product as far as color goes.

So after conversing with more than a few people I’m not sure that this would be a big seller for a few reasons such as, not knowing what it smells like, having a misconception of what it smells like, the cost of it so afraid to take the plunge.

Because of these factors what I’m going to do is offer Pre - Orders on the Violeta Shave Soap and Skin Food Splash. This way the folks that know they want it will be assured they will get a set. So what’s left over if there is any will be up for the public to give it a try.

The other thing I’m going to do is when someone buys a Rosa Shave Soap or Shave Creme. Im going to include a small vial of what would be the Violeta Revitalizing Serum. This way they can get an idea of what real Violet smells like. If there’s enough requests for Violeta I’ll make a bigger batch quickly along with the matching Lotion, Serum and maybe an EDP.

So if you want to place a Pre - Order for the Violeta please use the email on the website to contact me and we will secure the  Violeta products you want.

The Violeta is about 10 days to 2 weeks from being released just to give you a realistic timeline as the labels which will be ordered on Monday which normally take that long to get to me but the product will be made and ready to get labeled and go up on the website.  I’ll post an update when I get the tracking # from the label company as then I should have an exact date it will be available.

Best regards and just a little Violeta photos for you Violet fans out there.

Is the Violeta infusion made with wild North American violets or the big cultivated African violets?

My maternal grandmother collected African violets. She was a very pious woman, but believed that new varieties would only grow if she stole a leaf to cultivate. Her friends were all aware of this. If they spotted her admiring a plant, they would leave the room for a moment to give her a chance to discretely pinch off a leaf, wrap it in a tissue, and stash it in her “pocketbook”. Every window in her house was full of little cups of water with a single leaf in them growing new roots.

When a leaf fell off one of her plants, she would put them in water to root also, and give them away. I never asked why those didn’t need to be stolen. Big Grin

I do know the smell of the leaves, though it’s been 30~40 years.

The infusion is made from African Violets - but it uses the leaves and flowers.  Also there is a Violet absolute which rounds out the scent according to Frank.  I just happened to have a custom order in with him and he explained to me how Violet was made and what was used in it.  I truly don't know what Violet's bouquet is, but I am intrigued!

Love that story! Your Grandma sounds like a real character.

The infusion was made with the leafs and flowers of 2 blooming African Violet plants and I used both the green leafs and the flowers. It’s funny only two florists had them. Maybe it was early in the season.

What is an “absolute” in this context?

(04-29-2023, 09:02 PM)sgarnett Wrote: What is an “absolute” in this context?

The simplest explanation is that Absolutes have a higher concentration of the Aromatic, ( in this case the Violet ) than the Essential oil) does.

Absolutes are different from essential oils as they contain not only essential oil, but also a higher density of other components from the entire Violet plant.

In many cases they are more difficult to work with than an Essential oil as they can be very thick syrupy like and don’t break down easily.

Hope that answers your question.

6.. Vetivert
5.. Nuage De Citron
1. ShaveMD
3. Melange Di Agrume - New Tallow Shave Creme and new Aroma Blend - More Ruby Red Grapefruit essential oil.
4.. Fresco
2.. Blood Orange - New Tallow Shave Creme with the fresh Blood Orange from Italy.

I’d start with the lighter summer scents and work down to heavier late summer/fall scents.

I also didn’t stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.  I truly have no idea what an absolute is compared to an essential oil.  Syrupy sounds hard to work with for me, even sticky.

I hate a post shave sticky feeling - which I NEVER have any residual feeling from Ethos Splashes or lotion.
