Hello ALI

Mark was a true gentleman and a good friend. I think about him often and miss his voice at the other end of the phone. I made a promise to myself that I’d make the ShaveMD every spring as Mark loved the scent and said to me that it would be his Summer scent as he had a very bad case of asthma and could only tolerate certain scents like the ShaveMD Aroma blend that I made for him which is Lemon, Lime and Ginger essential oils. Mark called it Ginger Ale.

I’ll make it this spring in the new F.Base and post it up on here and social media. Also as the last release sone of the proceeds will go to Marks favorite charity, the Ronald McDonald Foundation.

Best regards.

Question:

I’ve been working on a Fougere for quite some time and I’m curious to hear what you guys look for in one. I can say two things. I’m not a fan of the Paco, type Fougeres but more the classic like the very first one which was by Houbigant Fougere Royal back in 1892.

The only thing is as you know I want to do it using all natural Aroma ingredients rather than synthetics.

I’ve got one that I started almost two years ago and my inspiration was MDC Fougere Shave soap as I really liked it ( an still do ) but I was frustrated because they didn’t make a matching aftershave or cologne so I started playing and I’m very close but I see so many modern Fougeres out there but many of them not only are totally synthetic but seem to be very far from what a original Fougere was.. so I’d like to hear what some of you like in a Fougere.

Thanks all

Frank, my favorite fougère has always been Houbigant Fougère Royale (although I also really like Penhaligon's English Fern). I like fougères that are relatively heavy on the lavender, geranium, and vetiver and that have a somewhat dark musk note. I don't like the brighter, more modern, citrusy ones.

Hi Frank, my ideal fougere is something close to Penhaligon's English Fern. Soapy, herbal, upbeat, and refreshing. Perfect for spring.
My only issue with EF is it's slightly sharp so it tingles my noise a little.
MDC Fougere is another favorite.

By far, favourite is B&M Fougère Imperiale. It is claimed by expert reviewers damned near a clone of the original Houbigant Fougere Royal.

This no soft core main stream scent BUT, once accustomed, it prepossessing and addictive.  The opening, to be fair, is challenging.

Ahhh... The fougère baby: Traditionally, a fougere perfume combines Lavender, Oakmoss and Coumarin. Lavender provides a sweetness whilst Oakmoss gives the fragrance a earthy quality, freshness is added by the blend of Coumarin, which has a mild smell of harvested hay. Alongside the traditional ingredients, modern fougere fragrances often include notes of Bergamot, Galbanum and Vetiver. Generally, fougere scents are very clean, green, and natural smelling and are characterised by a dry, grassy, hay-like dry down.

My favorites:

Tom Ford's Fougère d'Argent - king of the hill!

Floris 89
Ralph Lauren Safari
Margielas 'A day at the barber'
SV Felce Aromatica
Rive Gauche
Azzaro P'Homme

Thank you
Got some good ideas

Seems so far that we are all on the same page. My challenge is to create a Fougere that is from all natural aroma ingredients. I’m almost there the one I made but it needs something more. Maybe some Orris Butter I’m thinking

I have to try the Tom Ford d’Argent I’ve been seeing good things on some YouTube channels on it.

I have to say I was really disappointed in the SV FelceAromatica . I used to use the Soap and aftershave years ago but my soap got orange spots on it after many years and hadn’t used it in a very long time so I ordered it as I always liked it but when I got it the shave soap smelled really off and was very synthetic and the aftershave smelled like it went bad and it was very musty I got a replacement but for me it was the same so it’s funny how our noses change sometimes as I used to really like that a lot. The more I get into natural artisanal perfuming the more I’m moving away from synthetics.

The original Fougere notes made in 1892 were

Bergamot
Lavender
Geranium
Oakmoss
Coumarin

It was the first men’s real masculine scent to be created from aroma chemicals.

Well I believe you already know my thoughts on this but just to chime in: Anything that gets close to MdC Fougere or is an inspired complement. Really looking forward to this one. I believe at last count I have sampled 10+ fougeres from various soap makers. But none of them could match the MdC experience, on scent notes.

Another big MdC Fougere fan here.
