Desmond's Barrow

I used the Patchouli Spritz this morning, very nice soap. The scent isn't what I expected but its quite nice. More subtle and earthy smelling than I thought it would be, with a restrained grapefruit. I think it will be one of those that requires a few uses before you fully appreciate the scent. Excellent performance with the lather almost leaping out of the tin. Thanks Peter, its Mossly Lime time tomorrow.

The similarity with Beaudelaire is only in the dry dusty/earthy in the beginning but where Beaudelaire is more chalky (like a garage) the Joie de Vetiver is a more earthy dry. Then they diverge.
Now when I have gotten some more shaves with the soap I have been able to put a word on a note that have eluded me, Pu'er.

And I even have a DB soap underway. Partial to vetiver, but for that reason I have and have had quite a few soaps and products of that fragrance, so I opted for the lavender. (I think I ordered two different lavender aftershaves too, to get the full lav shave going.)

In case anyone has been waiting for the Mossly Lime to be restocked on March 29th, I am delaying it one week so that there will also be new stock of Lavenders and Patchouli Spritz, both of which sold out today and are a week behind the Mossly Lime in their cure.

Hey, Peter, I used your Joie de Vetiver for this morning's shave and it was even better than my first go 'round with it.  The eathiness of the vetiver that you captured is superb. However, if someone is not a fan of vetiver then this isn't going to be for you.  In that case, consider one of Desmond's Barrow's other scents.  Performance on all three of mine (the aforementioned Joie de Vetiver, Lemon Lavender, and Patchouli Spritz) is top notch.

Thanks again to all who have been so supportive of Desmond's Barrow the last few months. I've gotten lots of helpful feedback that I very much appreciate. I hear all of you.

I want to take a moment to speak to a common enquiry or comment that I've received - and emphasize that DB soaps are formulated with essential oils or other natural components wherever possible.

Fragrance oils are used very sparingly - currently the only product that has one is Mossly Lime. I do this because it's my preference to work with essential oils, which I personally tolerate better than most fragrance oils; and also because I think there's a place in the market for this kind of product.

As most of you know, any fragrance, "natural" or otherwise, can cause sensitivities when used improperly. Essential oils generally don't have as much intensity as fragrance oils; and using EO's in safe concentrations often means the scents will be less prominent.

So please be aware that Desmond's Barrow soaps are likely to be perceived as relatively lightly scented, even though I find the scents thoroughly "there" from the start of a shave through to the finish. Maybe it's because I stick to lightly scented products in general.

Thanks for your post and so sorry for the delayed reply - when I first saw your question I was in the midst of reevaluating Desmond's Barrow and didn't have an answer.

The short answer is I'm not sure when the Lemon Lavender will be restocked - only that I do plan to make another batch sometime later this summer.

The longer answer is that I have decided at least for the time being to stop selling my soaps online. The store is currently open for browsing but the shopping cart has been disabled.

Unfortunately I don't have the time to run Desmond's Barrow properly as a viable business. Soapmaking was always a passion and hobby and I eventually decided to sell it in a more organized way because of the requests I was receiving for it.

But I've now decided that until I'm able to dedicate more time and resources to develop the product line and grow the business, that it's better to simplify my life and return to soapmaking as a hobby. I would certainly be pleased to continue to sell the soap on a casual basis when available. I'm still reachable through the store contact form, so if you want to drop me a line I would be happy to give you longer term contact information. Of course, I can always be reached via the forums.


To the fine, fine, people of Damn Fine Shave and my other incredible fellow enthusiasts, I can't express the pleasure you've given me because you've enjoyed my soaps and for being so supportive. I will continue to improve my craft with your feedback in mind. I will always be an artisanal soapmaker at heart!
