Just curious if delayed razor burn is possible. I've only been wet shaving for a little over a month. I have only had razor burn a few times in my life. Today I had a good shave using some new products I just received the other day. Face felt great after the shave. About five or six hours later I wiped my face with a towel after spending the day in the shop and instantly painful and looks like razor burn. I'm wondering if it is razor burn or a side effect of grinding bevels in knife blanks for a couple hours. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

I had the same thing happen to me when I started.  In my case, I think it was two two fold I never had BBS shaves using cartridge razors because I was shaving with one pass and being done.  So my face was never used to being really cleanly and closely shaven.  It was more sensitive to a lot of things for a few months even laying my cheek on a pillow at times felt "odd".

The second, is your skin needs to adjust to a new way of shaving.  If you have only been doing this a month your epidermis needs to adjust.  I equate it to no difference to the sore muscles one experiences when they start working out.

Good news is for me after about three months the sensation I had similar to what you describe subsided and it's never been an issue since.

This happened to me & it took me awhile to figure it out. It was brush burn from scrubbing too much while lathering. I had to find softer knots & tips. Worst brush burn I ever got was from a horsehair knot. It's weird because it feels pretty good while lathering, but then hours later can be no joy.

I actually had this problem as well with a Simpsons PJ2 in best badger, iirc.

It seems fairly possible.  My face will sometimes turn red when I wash it in the evening, but only if I've shaved that morning.  I usually don't get burning, but it definitely looks like my face is irritated.

You might also be sensitive to something that contacted your face. I had it happen once with a bar soap. An hour or so after washing my face it got red and inlamed and it was a product I'd used for years. Maybe it was an out of spec' bar? I don't know. Just be aware of the possibility.

I'd also only change one thing at a time to see if you can narrow it down.

for me, soaps/creams with a lot of lime in it will burn me up good. an alum block will also set my face on fire as well.

Yeah, I still don't see how so many people can use alum after each shave. That stuff is the devil's salt to my skin.

I think it's pretty nasty stuff, too, if it's used over the entire shaved area instead of just to stop the odd weeper. Besides the unpleasant burn, it leaves my skin feeling very dry. I only use it for those small weepers to help stem the bleeding but that is all.
