Semogue 1250, Ash, 22mm boar
Shave 23

I started Decemboar a day early with the Semogue 1250. After using dense synthetic brushes for the last month, this semi-floppy porcine tuft seemed a bit loose. But it made a pretty good lather, and the flow-through was excellent.

The handle is made of wood, but I can't decide what kind of wood it actually is. It sort of looks like white oak, but some vendors describe it as ash while others call it birch. What would you call it?

DecemBOAR Eve

As a night-shaver Friday is not a shave day for me; allows growth time for the Saturday Morning Luxury Shave. I did not want to miss out on the first day of DecemBOAR.

DecemBOAR begins with my first brush, the beloved Omega 49. After three years it is so surprisingly soft every time I use it. Best darned $10 I have spent.

A quick Google search finds a few variants, it seems: Beech and Oak. Yours looks like the one Gifts and Care calls Portuguese Oak Wood. That's really nothing more than a guess, though.

Regardless, it's a beautiful handle with some nice character. Sounds like a great performer, too. Definitely a nice start to DecemBoar Bouki.

Update: I just noticed you called it Ash Wood, in your header. That could also be it. Looks like they (maybe?) used whatever wood they could get, with each production run.

That's what I love about boar brushes. They release the lather with ease once fully broken in. Funny that the hog hair is the least of the lather hoggers.

I really love boar bristle brushes. I have  Omega and Semogue brushes but also have some Turkish brands too.

This is Niva Mono Profesyonel boar bristle brush, a Turkish brand and unfortunately they're not producing anymore. I bought 10 years ago and will be a kind of vintage.

Usually it's best to go to vintagescent.com if you are unsure of the wood type. The reason being is they've had the closest working relationship with Semogue with the vendors that I know of. Perhaps some others have a close history too. They have changed the handle woods around some over the years. I noticed it with the 2000 series. I purchased that about back in 2010, and I forget when they changed the wood, but it's different now. If you ever saw a picture of mine you would notice as mine has a deeper color than what is used now. I believe looking at more brushes it is Cherrywood. I had my finish coming off and I liked it so much I sent it back to the manufacturer to be refinished. Very glad I did. It's now made from Ashwood. What yours is listed as there is Ashwood as well, and matches quite well the Ashwood SOC boar. I have a 1250 and a Ashwood SOC.
