A Very Old Southern term for the starting play of a football game. A kickoff is at the beginning of the each game which used to be played with pigskin or animal skin footballs. Adapted meaning over time to many things as a way to say....

Wow, very informative! I figured football, but never got the whole reference until now. Thanks for educating me! Bless my heart, I am too educated! (I am told "bless his/her/your heart" is a Southern polite put down. At least, according to Wikipedia.
