I got back from a business conference in Nashville on Friday and moved into my basement to self quarantine from my lovely bride of 34 years (well, almost). She made unmerciful fun of my precaution and even asked if I thought it was time to put on a bonnet because I was “a baby”. Monday I slipped out of the house or go to the mountains alone to saw a dead tree I knew of for turning wood for my kids lathe. The tree was only 40 yards from where I could park, elevation is “up there”, but terrain is relatively flat and let me tell you by the time I carried my mighty stihl to the site, cut the wood I needed into chunks, and hauled all the pieces back to the truck (about 50 lbs) I was toast! Had to sit on the tailgate and wonder if my wife and her bonnet comment might be true. As I sat and pondered my total lack of energy I started to self-assess and recognized a headache, some wheezing, and a tickle in the back of my throat. Oh no! Ha, I still thought perhaps I was getting a cold but the fatigue was puzzling. I drank a big slug of water and headed home, recovering all the while. I unloaded the wood and the saw, and my trusty 22LR I’d planned to plink with but didn’t have the desire, showered, and went downstairs to read.
I might be the only Econ major with a ton of high powered biology and chemistry credits. I’d toyed with the idea of med school while in business school and spend some semesters with the pre-med folks. I made the grades and loved the classes (except for organic chemistry. Hated that one). But I noted they were different cats than me and I focused on business. Bet some of them wish they had now too. There was a microbiology class taught by an old warhorse names Lloyd Pierson and although other students didn’t like his very gruff demeanor, I found myself very appreciative of his teaching. He may have taught me too much about the microbial world because now my kids call me the germaphobe. well I am certainly not a germaphobe but I do have a very low tolerance for avoidable Illness. And although it gets my goat when the CDC gives me directive and then changes it weekly. Come on Fauci, be ok telling me you don’t know but this is your best guess. I’m ok with that! Well anyway, I’ve been masking and sanitizing and weighing things in the balance and generally trying to live my life fully without impacting someone else because of poor choices. I love my clients and it appeared when we scheduled the conference that things were settling down. I was fully vaccinated as soon as I was able because for Pete’s sake our economy can’t take another hit like the last shut down. Basically doing the best I could to live life, conduct business, and keep people safe. Making the best choices I could.
But Tuesday morning, the morning after playing tuberculosis lumberjack I awoke feeling pretty rough. “Bad cold” I thought again not noticing the headache. Wednesday I woke up even worse but still felt good enough to answer emails and take calls and have some virtual conversations and had a very productive day but had no energy at days end and finally a strong sense of why. Pretty sure it was Covid. Went to bed to awake at about 4am to a screaming headache, sweat through PJs, and nausea that would make me a champion hurler. Yep, Covid! I sent messages to the office that I would be incommunicado for the day and scheduled a test. 4 swabs stuffed into my nostrils until they tickled memories of when I was three years old. Dude, she was digging! They ran a rapid and a standard screening. I waited. Doc McLaughlin came out dressed like he was in a movie set for Ebola. I queried “how you doing today doc”? He answered “I’m fine but you most definitely are not”. Positive for Covid. He wrote me a long list of prescriptions including ivermectin, yes the antihelminthic used for parasites in man and beast which I thought was voodoo magic but it turns out there is evidence that it is efficacious in hindering a virus from replicating. (I am a big yes for that!) so worst case scenario is if it doesn’t work for Covid at least I’ll be wormed for the winter.
Feeling great today. Slept wonderfully well last night and expect the same tonight. Feels like Thursday morning was the worst and it also feels like being fully vaccinated helped a ton. I got the Moderna shots and faced zero visible symptoms although I don’t doubt that others haven’t faired as well. I’ll be watching that my affected lung function doesn’t start to change for the worst. So far oxygen saturation is awesome. I think I’m getting better. I certainly know I faced nothing like some of my children who were not vaccinated and got sick. The vacc wasn’t available then. Sick? You bet but only one day of flat-backing. Feeling pretty blessed actually. I’ve had Covid take 4 close friends so far.
So what have been your experiences with Covid?
