Gents-

Straight Razor newb here and I have a quick question:

What is the correct sound the razor makes when stropping?

If i lay the blade flat with light pressure even between the bevel and spine, it makes very little sound.

If i put a little more pressure on the bevel to make sure it's pressing against the leather, it makes a hissing sound, with a metallic zing when done fast.

Is this the right sound it's supposed to make?

I know all strops are different, but I want to know if I'm overdoing it or not.

Thanks in advance!

Here is the sound of even stropping:

While these were meant to address even vs uneven, the sound of the even can be a guide.

Also you can google 'lynn abrams youtube stropping' for more info from someone who knows his stuff.

Keep in mind, all strops can and will vary on sound, limit downward pressure, try to keep the strop taught but not white knuckle tight.
Concentrate on smooth action.
No matter what material you are stropping on,try to maintain an even sound on the pass up the strop ,and back down.

A very helpful video.

The edge is very delicate, also,a full hollow is going to sound much different than a wedge ,or a quarter hollow ground.

Until you know what normal sounds like for your blade, you will need to practice.

I haven't near the experience as some of the guys here, but for me...I don;t worry about the sound as much as I do the feel. I make a conscious effort to keep the blade light on the strop. Much like the guy in the first video posted, it is a mental image in my mind of keeping the edge very light, almost gliding slightly above the surface of the strop. Obviously, it isn;t gliding above the surface, but this is the mental image I have in mind, which helps me to keep a very light hand whilst stropping.
