I really like reading these posts John, even though I don’t have any of the fragrances you’re using!
I’m not very creative in terms of pairing colognes with AS’s, it’s something I wish I was able to do better.

Thank you. For me the pairings are pretty much just trial and error and guessing what will work together. After I put together a couple that seem to 'fit' each other, I sometimes find that they have shared notes or shared scent families such as spices or green herbs. There is nothing scientific or even logical about how I experiment with them.

For Christmas morning, remembering when my parents put mandarin oranges and little sachets of spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon sticks in my stocking on the fireplace mantle, I used Armani Acqua di Giò aftershave and the Scentville clone of Amouage Epic Man.

The aftershave has top notes of lime, lemon, bergamot, jasmine, orange, mandarin orange and neroli; middle sea notes, jasmine, calone, peach, freesia, hyacinth, cyclamen, rosemary, violet, coriander, nutmeg, rose and mignonette; and base notes white musk, cedar, oakmoss, patchouli and amber.

The fragrance has top notes of pink pepper, olibanum, saffron, nutmeg, cardamom, caraway, mace and myrtle; middle notes myrrh and geranium; and base notes are oud, incense, leather, castoreum, patchouli, cedar, sandalwood, styrax and musk.

Their only shared notes are nutmeg, patchouli, cedar, and musk. But the citruses of the aftershave blend really nicely with the spices of the EdT.

This morning I used vintage Floris Elite aftershave, followed by a clone of Creed Bois du Portugal.
The aftershave top notes are bergamot, juniper, cedar, grapefruit and petitgrain; middle notes are fir, lavender and bay leaf; and base notes are oakmoss, leather, vetiver, cedar, amber, musk and patchouli.

The fragrance top note is bergamot; middle note is lavender; and base notes are sandalwood, cedar, vetiver and ambergris.

So the shared notes are bergamot, lavender, cedar, and vetiver. And they blended really well.

Today it was Chanel Égoïste Platinum aftershave and Ethos Grooming Mysore Santal EdP. The aftershave top notes are lavender, rosemary, neroli and petitgrain; middle notes are geranium, clary sage, galbanum and jasmine; base notes are oakmoss, vetiver, cedar, sandalwood and amber. So their shared note is the sandalwood.

Thank you. Do you pair aftershaves and fragrances?

My first thought would be to go with a lime fragrance, such as Royall Lyme Bermuda, TOBS No. 74, Hermes Eau d'Orange Verte, or Creed Virgin Island Water. Other scents that I believe would match well would be some kind of woods, especially cedar and sandalwood (perhaps Tom Ford Oud Wood, Givenchy Gentleman, Yves St. Laurent Splendid Wood, Comme des Garcons Wonderwood, or Mugler A*Men Pure Wood) or leathers (Jo Malone Bronze Wood & Leather, Ferragamo Intense Leather, Tom Ford Ombre Leather, or Malin + Goetz Leather). I haven't tried all those, but their descriptions suggest to me that they might work. For some unknown reason, I also think fragrances with vetiver or pathouli, or maybe a dark fougere, would also be good.

I’ve been using this one recently after a bay rum shave, it’s a random inexpensive frag I got in a BST purchase but I’ve found it works with bay rum.
