I'm also an advocate of the Feather, but I think your approach to use the OneBlade for an extended period of time is a good start.

I personally don't get the allure of aggressive razors and multiple passes. IMO, both, guilty parties and contributors to irritation.

As I say, my EJ is my only razor so far so I can't compare with others, but if it does work on a beard like mine, this razor has to be good. Some say its mild yet effective and I have to agree, even based in my short experience. A few fellows have suggested me to try a Slant and it will, quite likely, be my next purchase. Feel free to chime in with your say on this, if you wish to.

Thank you for the post, @"Schrittmacher"! Indeed, I seem to also be in that latter category of (maybe?) thinner skin on my face, yet a coarse beard. Being very aware of pressure has served me well with most razors (the OneBlade being the exception, not because it requires pressure, but because it's forgiving of it).

I had the Mühle version of the EJ razor (same head design) for a bit, and liked it well enough, but gave it away to convert a coworker to wet shaving. I remember it being mild (in a good way) but I did have to be more aware of the angle to get it to cut effectively.

I also had the ATT S2 slant for a good while, and I like that razor a lot (I just ended up getting others I liked better, so it was being neglected). But until I got better with the Wolfman, and until I tried the OneBlade, the ATT slant stood out to me as the first razor that didn't seem to cause any irritation or nicks, despite shaving very effectively. I think this is from the shearing angle of the slant, yes, but also because a slant design usually torques the blade, adding rigidity to thin DE metal.

For what it's worth, I didn't have such great luck with the Merkur slant; it was much more liable to nick and irritate, but that's me.

I suspect you'd like some of the same razors I've come to appreciate, that is, the ATT slant, classic SEs like Schick injectors or the GEM 1912, and, yep, the OneBlade. I can pretty well say that the OneBlade is the best razor I've used from the perspective of efficiency-meets-safety. It's a pretty penny, but might be a revelation for you, too.

I assume you mean the Feather AS-D2, yes? If so, would you agree with Hobbyist that the trick is finding just the right angle, and at that point it's nicely efficient?

I have the standard Wolfman, ASD2 and the ATT you mention David.

I like them all but on the ATT prefer the R1/2 plates at a minimum. The M I don't find as efficient for my beard and I don't even recall the last time I used it.

Wolfman you already have and I too am a fan. It is easier to dial in in some ways due to increased blade gap/exposure.

The ASD2 shaves a treat once you crack the angle but it is less tolerant if you don't maintain it- doesn't bite but you just will not get the efficiency. I find it pairs perfectly with their blades too.

Intuitive, it delivers great, comfortable shaves and I would recommend it heartily.

If the AS-D2 works well for me, I could see it supplanting the Wolfman as my go-to DE razor, which means my active roster would be very pared-down: OneBlade, one of these two DEs, and maybe whichever GEM works best for me. A few of the rest I'd keep for collectible/sentimental reasons (my replated NEW SC, for instance), and then sell the others, hopefully to fine folks in the DFS community. I'm comfortable having a fairly large collection of soaps/creams, but for whatever reason I just don't want that many razors hanging around.

Actually a pretty close analogy and they do have similar qualities.

It's difficult but there have been times when I get a little careless with the ASD2 and get a weeper. Just a reminder that it is a razor and that I can't completely coast with it.

Regardless, if you do pick one up definitely give it a full run to dial it in. I very much like mine and this thread has prompted me to pull it out again- so thanks for that onethinline !

I'll throw another option into the mix that's treated me very well, the Ikon 102 slant. My skin is insanely sensitive to things like menthol, alcohol, and to a lesser extent certain EO's and fragrance oils. Menthol makes me look like I have a sunburn, and alcohol just gets uncomfortable. I have really fair skin so that I sunburn easily, and get windburn in minutes. Couple all that with a thick, and in a lot of spots, curly beard, leads to shaving bliss. (sarcasm button fully on ) Especially on my neck, where I'm pretty sure that my skin is like half normal thickness.

I use the Personna Med Prep Blades and they work great in this razor. Did a run where I went through 8 different blades to narrow down to this. Used this combo until Jan 2016 exclusively. I know people have had problems with them on their CS, but I ordered this from Smallflower, and have had no issues thankfully.The biggest leap forward in dialing everything in was to solely use that 102 for a month straight. I realized that the shaves were progressively getting better and much less irritating. Then I stopped using my other razors totally. That is until I got the vintage bug and went nutso on old razors.

Despite ordering an AS-D2 just now based on this thread, I'm going to stick with the OneBlade for 14 days (started this morning) and limit to familiar, problem-free soaps during that time. I think it'll give me a good baseline from which to judge other razors, and help me cull my collection down to what really works for me. I also predict my skin will start looking better than it has in a long time. We shall see!
